Found: A Multitasking Sunscreen That Won't Leave You Dull or Greasy

My skincare routine changes depending on the season or my skin’s specific needs at the time, but there’s one product that’s always a mainstay: sunscreen. Consistency with sunscreen application is how I’ve been able to keep my skin semi-clear of hyperpigmentation and dark spots. Overexposure to the sun’s UV rays can jumpstart the overproduction of melanin, worsening existing dark spots. If you’re not wearing sunscreen on a daily basis, your skincare routine is basically moot when it comes to keeping your skin clear.

But protecting your skin is easier said than done, especially for people with deeper skin tones. Many sunscreen formulas are non-flattering for brown and Black skin, leaving behind an ashy or gray finish. It’s been an uphill battle to find a sunscreen that’s lightweight, non-greasy, and blends into my skin without a trace, but I’ve been able to find a handful of brands that check off all the boxes. The latest one to make the list? Thrive Causemetics Sunproof 3-in-1 Invisible Priming Sunscreen SPF 37.

I’ve been a fan of the brand ever since I started using their Liquid Lash Extensions Mascara—it’s incredible—so when I heard about the latest launch and the partnership behind it, I knew I had to give it a try. Thrive Causemetics doesn’t go the traditional influencer route when it comes to brand partnerships. To celebrate the launch of the Sunproof, Thrive Causemetics held a Giving Impact Event, where they partnered with local nonprofit Beauty 2 the Streetz, an organization founded by Shirley Raines that offers food, beauty products, and grooming services to LA’s homeless population. “Shirley is an influencer in the way we think is important—she has an impact on the community,” says Karissa Bodnar, founder of Thrive Causemetics. “She’s changing the way people think about themselves.”

Why partner with Beauty 2 the Streetz for this specific launch? Homeless people are at the front lines of the climate crisis. “They’re living full-time in the environment, unprotected from the harsh elements. You can see the sun damage on their skin,” says Raines. “They have no access to regular skincare routines, so the best thing we can do is try to provide protection."

She continues, “Makeup and skincare products are CPR. Who applies pressure while you’re on the streets? Who’s giving you those life-saving measures? And what does that pressure look like? We’re applying pressure until the paramedics show up, until the city comes up with a plan to help these people.”

My Review

Sunproof’s SPF 37 formula also includes banana flower and spirulina maxima extract—ingredients that work in tandem to hydrate and smooth the skin. The gel formula spreads easily across the skin before sinking in, and it doesn’t leave your skin feeling dry or looking ashy afterwards. Sunproof also doubles as a base for makeup application; I tested out the product on no-makeup days as well as days where I applied foundation overtop. It plays well with other products—not only did it leave behind a smooth canvas for makeup application, but it didn’t pill when I began to add product on top.

I’ve tested out so many sunscreens over the years and it can be difficult to find a product that doesn’t turn your skin gray. However, Sunproof’s featherlight and quick-absorbing formula hasn’t let me down. If you're in the market for a sunscreen that won't make you look dull or greasy, I’d definitely recommend adding it to your cart.
