I’m Not Giving Up The Maxi Skirt This Winter

As the temperatures plummet, here's a case for continuing summer's witchy trend.

This summer, we brought our maxi skirts back in rotation, thanks to the return of the boho trend. Now that winter is here though, many of us are getting practical and opting for pants, cleaner lines, and heavy duty material to keep us warm. When the cold front comes in, necessity often overtakes style—but I’m not ready to leave the witchy, whimsicality of summer’s boho revival behind just yet. So, I’m making a case for the winter maxi skirt, just as Chemena Kamali did with her Fall/Winter 2025 Chloé collection earlier this year.

A low slung, black maxi skirt can easily fit into a winter wardrobe with a few key adjustments, as demonstrated by the first look from Kamali’s Chloé collection. The key is to opt for a heavier fabric and layer tights, or even wool leggings, underneath for maximum coziness. These shapes were continued throughout the entire collection, where Kamali paired watery, floor-length skirts with fur-trimmed jackets and coats and chunky belts worn low on the hips.

Maison Margiela

Elsewhere, we saw the trend on the runways this October in Paris at Maison Margiela, where Glenn Martens sent heavy leather black maxi skirts down the runway, and Ann Demeulemeester, where Stefano Gallici—whose work is underscored by gothic, piratey, and certainly boho codes—sent a series of silk brocade floor length skirts in pink and slate grey.

The silhouette is simple enough: a slightly cropped shirt or sweater, an oversized coat or jacket to add to the drama and proportions of it all. Accessories make the look, so don’t forget a belt and a pair of good boots to make things feel more complete. Because these silhouettes appeared in the Spring/Summer 26 season, brands are telling us there will still be buying desire come spring. In other words: it’s perfectly timely, even cost-effective, to be investing in the perfect maxi skirt around now and wear it straight to next season.

There is something quite dramatic about a maxi skirt in winter, perhaps even more so than summer. A commitment to the goth princess aesthetic, perhaps? Or maybe it’s the effect of not caring about the elements, and wearing what makes most sense for you and your wardrobe. Either way, the case for the boho-adjacent maxi skirt in winter is closed. We’re wearing it!
