Welcome to The Simple Things, a wellness series dedicated to the routines and rituals that bring a sense of well-being to our daily lives. As the name implies, sometimes it’s not about making seismic shifts in our day-to-day—simple actions can be just as impactful for ourselves and for those in our community. This week, we’re chatting with Tayshia Adams—television personality, host, and former Bachelorette who recently partnered with skincare brand No7—about her self-care journey, spirituality, and more.

The past few years have been transformative for everyone. How has it changed your approach to wellness?

“It's a massive priority that I do not compromise on anymore. Even if I decide to go out on a Friday night, all of my friends know I have a 9:30 a.m. workout every single Saturday. It's just where I'm going to be. And with therapy, whether I have another meeting set, or if I have something else to do, or if I'm traveling, I [still] make time for it. I just really prioritize my mental health and keeping my mind and body right.”

How did it become a priority in your life? What has that process looked like for you?

"It all started with therapy and really identifying what I needed to be self-fulfilled. Also, I’ll say a breakup will do that to you. It makes you [re]evaluate and prioritize yourself. That was also was a major push for me to be like, okay, Tayshia, you got to get back on track. You have to really love yourself and take care of yourself because at the end of the day, all you have is yourself. If you don't take care of yourself, who's going to do it? It's been a journey and it's not something that I’ve always prioritized. I mean, sure, I would get a massage here or eat healthy. But [now I’m asking myself], are you really getting enough sleep? Are you working out? Are you meditating? Are you seeing a therapist? It's things like that that I’ve had to reevaluate and figure out what was really missing in my day-to-day [life]."

You mentioned having to love yourself first. What does that mean to you?

"I don't know if that's an easy question and that's something I’ve even brought up. What does it mean to love yourself first? What makes me happy? It's really scary when it's hard to identify what makes you happy and I'm still on that journey. I'm figuring it out every single day, but loving myself first means, again, prioritizing myself, setting boundaries, and figuring out what feels good and what fuels me. If I'm pouring into something and not getting anything out of it, that's not loving myself. That's actually depleting and making me not feel good about who I am. It's things like that. You really just have to look within and ask yourself those tough questions. Did that feel good? Do I know this isn’t right for me, but I'm still doing it anyway? Why am I doing that? It takes a lot of work."

I know that you meditate and you’re also a Christian. How do you implement this spiritual practice into your daily life?

"I always read my Jesus Calling—it’s a daily devotional. It's a quick and easy read. It's really easy to put a lot of pressure on yourself and say, okay, I'm going to read my devotional then I have to write in my journal, then I have to do all of these [other] things. It doesn't have to be like that. I used to have those expectations, which is why I would fail at it; it's because I didn't have the time or I just put too much pressure on myself, but now I just read my devotional and I sit there and give myself five to seven minutes to let it permeate.

I ask God for what I need that day or [talk about] how I'm feeling. My spirituality and my relationship with God is huge for me. It's something I heavily rely on. My life is a roller coaster. All of our lives are a roller coaster. We're constantly going through things—good and bad. With all of that, gratitude is major. At the same time, it keeps me humble and grounded. It just gives me something to rely on."

Do you start your day off with any other rituals?

"[The] first thing I do is roll out of bed, [make some] coffee, then I have to put on the workout outfit because if you don't put on your workout outfit, you're not going to work out. So I do that [then I] run to my bathroom. I always have certain products that I put on and I think my skincare routine is another way to show myself love through using products that make you feel good. For me, that's always putting on my eye cream and my serums. No7 has a really good one that I love to use—it's the Lift and Luminate Triple Action Serum. Then I always follow up with their moisturizer and sunscreen."

Do you have an evening routine? How do you wind down?

"[The first thing I do] is make tea. It's a really good way to wind down. Then I shower. I have this lavender body wash and Soap and Glory body scrub that I love to use at night. It really just makes your skin super soft. Then I get out, put on lotion, drink my tea, and put on your nighttime skin routine with a little bit of music [on]. Then either I do yoga or I read my book and decompress and just knock out."

What are a few things that are bringing you joy right now?

"Well, I worked out this morning and I feel like I'm seeing results. That brings me a lot of joy. Lately I've felt a lot of support and my friends and family have brought me a lot of joy. I [also] just really love New York City. Just the opportunity to be here and even having the financial means to even provide for myself, it brings me a lot of joy."
