There is a time and a place for sophisticated, understated elegance, and the Grammys is not it. This is the red carpet that is indirectly responsible for the invention of Google Image Search (thank you to J.Lo and Versace). It’s the red carpet that served us Cardi B in her archival Mugler Couture "Birth of Venus" dress and Lady Gaga’s space age Armani Privé look.
This year, we are acknowledging the celebrities and musicians who stepped up to the challenge—not necessarily the most outrageous, but those who made real sartorial decisions and risks. Pink was a big theme of the night, with Saweetie stunning in a Valentino two-piece reminiscent of Marilyn Monroe’s iconic Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend gown, St. Vincent joining Dakota Johnson and Jessica Chastain on the Gucci train with a dress from the Love Parade collection, and Justin Bieber perhaps cosplaying as a Harmony Korine character in a hot pink beanie. Michelle Zauner of Japanese Breakfast embodied the joy of her Grammy-nominated album Jubilee in a sunshine yellow Valentino Couture mini dress, and Billie Eilish stayed true to form in an oversized Rick Owens pastiche of an overcoat and cybergothy shades. Here, we compile our 10 favorite glamorous, daring looks from the night.
