A ‘90s-Obsessed Stylist’s Take on Day-to-Night Dressing

Elizabeth Sulcer finds inspiration in Helmut Newton photography—and it shows.

Welcome to Style Diaries, a series where we research the physical manifestations of our closet tours IRL. We're asking friends and tastemakers to show us what they're *actually* wearing during the week and to provide a little insight into their thoughts on the current state of fashion. This week, we follow along with stylist Elizabeth Sulcer as she crafts ensembles that help her bounce from fashion shows to client meetings to late-night events.

What role does fashion play in your life? How does it serve you?

“Fashion has always been a big part of my life. I love how you can create characters and create your own world. That is what fashion is about for me: creating and exploring our dreams.”

“I love suits right now. I love the silhouette of a super-slim pant with an oversize jacket. The mini CHANEL bag, the jewels from my Ilene Joy collab, and my favorite YSL really complete the look. I felt like a real Helmut Newton muse!”

What does your style look like these days? Do you have a go-to outfit formula or do you prefer to switch it up when getting dressed?

“My style has always been about mixing uptown luxury and downtown ‘90s street aesthetics. For daytime, I love elevating chic basics with something luxurious, like vintage accessories and jewelry. At night, I love to bring out the glamour and fantasy.”

“After it was so cold for so long, I was so excited to dress up for the warm weather we were having! I love my new Celine jeans and have been wanting to wear them for a while now. Also, I’ve been dying to pull out the new mini Bvlgari bags finally. This creamy white coat is such a statement piece and felt so fresh to me.”

What energy are you bringing to your ensembles this season? What are you looking forward to wearing?

“I am manifesting positive, powerful, and magical energy! Right now, I am loving oversize androgynous suits paired with gold jewelry and accessories. A great-fitting jean is timeless and always in season. Currently, I’m obsessed with Celine, Bottega Veneta, Saint Laurent, CHANEL, and, of course, the Elizabeth Sulcer x Ilene Joy collaboration.”

Look 3: A Few More Shows, a Few More Meetings, and a Birthday Party

“It was NYFW and I had a few shows, had a few more meetings, then a birthday party for a friend. I needed a look that could transition from day to night easily but felt casual and cool. Monochromatic white is one of signature go-tos—always feels fresh and pure. This silhouette (and in denim) is so major!”

In terms of beauty, what does your go-to hair and makeup routine look like, and how does that change based on what you’re wearing?

“I like to keep it simple on the day-to-day and usually go without makeup and my hair up in a bun. If I’m not working, I love some ‘90s glam with a matte eye and an iconic nude lip. I let my hair down with a natural wave. I also love a Helmut Newton–inspired red lip when I am shooting or have a red carpet.”
