10 Things We Consumed This Week: From Kink-Inspired Eye Shadow to 90 Day Fiancé

Welcome to Coveteur’s Consumer Diaries! As our co-dependent relationship with the algorithm deepens with time, the bottomless scroll has turned us all into 24/7 consumers. As we consume varying degrees of news, targeted ads, trailers, shopping, and user-generated content, all accordioned together in an endless feed—our consumer habits have reached a fever pitch. Each week, we ask Coveteur staff members about what they consumed this past week and connect the dots on our consumer behavior with a trendspotting Venn diagram.

With Halloween fast approaching and two eclipses in October, there is an unmistakable edge in the air. While it’s PSLs and Christian Girl Autumn for some, it’s emo eye-liner and witchcore for the rest. We’re swapping summer’s dewy, pared-down makeup for Fairuza Balk’s look in The Craft—yes, “we are the weirdos, mister.” From new piercings to studded leather jackets to kink-inspired eye shadow palettes, this is what the Coveteur staff consumed in the second week of October.

1. 90 Day Fiancé

“Even with my obsession with tacky dating shows like Love Island, for some reason, I've resisted 90 Day Fiancé for years. I got the final push to check it out and have not stopped since I started.”— Sarah Lou Kiernan (Social Editor)

2. New York Adorned

“Fifteen years ago, I was a fashion PR intern dying to move to New York, so I went to the hottest local Soho spot for jewelry enthusiasts and earring stack addicts for a ‘don't tell my mom’ ear piercing. This week, I went back for a fourth lobe stud, and I remembered how much I love it there. The endless rows of sparkling studs, unfussy home decor, and accessory porn make it one of my favorite spots in the city.”—Leya Kaufman (Head of Brand—Publisher & VP of Sales)

3. Feng Chen Wang Pink Faux-Leather Jacket w/ Rivets

“There is always one or two stand-out pieces from this brand every few months. This is one of them.”—Greg Brossia (Chief Digital Officer)

4. How I Won a Nobel Prize by Julius Taranto

“The bulk of “How I Won A Nobel Prize” takes place at the Rubin Institute, a research institute located on an island off the coast of Connecticut. The institute is a refuge for canceled professors, artists, and other notable elites: ‘Give me your cancelees and deplorables, your preeminent deviants, we’ll take them!’ When Helen’s thesis adviser is kicked out of Cornell for alleged sexual indiscretions, she follows him to continue studying superconductive materials, which could, in theory, solve climate change. Julius Taranto does an incredible job crafting an ambitious and nuanced narrative about ‘cancel culture’ that’ll keep you laughing from start to finish. If you’re looking for a fall read, you’re in luck!!”—Ama Kwarteng (Beauty Director)

5. Isamaya Beauty, Industrial Color Pigments

“With Halloween around the corner, me and my friends are all trying out some bold and experimental makeup looks. Each color is so pigmented and creamy with an incredible shimmer. With shades like Fetish, Whip, Diesel, Leather, Sweat and more—this palette embodies the punk rock sexiness of the Isamaya beauty brand.” —Andie Eisen (Culture Editor)

6. "Baby Face" Article on AirMail

“In this piece, Linda Wells reports on ‘the new consumers who are raiding the skin-care aisles.’ I'm just going to share the first few sentences of the story because that's what immediately hooked me:

‘When Vivian gets ready for bed, she starts with a pre-cleansing oil. From there, it’s a steady stream of carefully mapped-out steps: a foaming cleanser, a toner, and a moisturizing gel. Where once she dipped into a traditional cream, she now spritzes with a hydrating spray, which is kinder to her particular complexion. Vivian is 12.’”—Ama Kwarteng (Beauty Director)

7. “You & Me” by Jennie of BLACKPINK

“My YouTube algorithm pops in a new surprise once in a while. The song is catchy and addicting, plus the visuals in the performance video are super captivating. From the high pigtails Jennie donned to the album cover illustrated by Sailor Moon's Naoko Takeuchi, I'm fully obsessed!”—Katie Mok (Content Management Coordinator)

8. Michele De Lucchi Pulcina Espresso Coffee Maker

“My friend got this as a birthday present for her boyfriend, and I was so jealous of how sexy it looked on their counter. It’s a classic stove-top espresso maker fashioned from cast aluminum and comes in three different colors and sizes. She’s curvy, she’s modern, she’s Italian—we love her.” —Andie Eisen (Culture Editor)

9. Merit Beauty Tinted Lip Oil

“I love a glossy lip and have been obsessed with this product lately. I've been wanting to test it out for a while and finally bought it in the shade Marrakech. It's the perfect touch of color for any time of day, plus it feels hydrating and actually lasts more than an hour!”—Samantha Wu (Marketing Coordinator)

10. Le Manoir Gelcare

“I’m cheating a bit since I don’t technically own this Le Manoir at-home gel kit, but my friend is always doling out manicures with her incredible array of gel nail products and polishes. With Halloween coming up, we’re all opting for moody colors like Patent Leather Black, Plum Royale, and Espresso. Highly recommend this kit if you want to avoid the salon costs long term, but I will warn you, once you start buying new polish colors, it’s incredibly addicting.” —Andie Eisen (Culture Editor)
