10 Things We Consumed This Week: From 'Bottoms' to Vintage Tea Kettles

Easing into September had us in the mood for something horny, chic, and worth a double-take.

Culture
Consumer Diaries Week of August 28

Welcome to Coveteur’s Consumer Diaries! As our co-dependent relationship with the algorithm deepens with time, the bottomless scroll has turned us all into 24/7 consumers. As we consume varying degrees of news, targeted ads, trailers, shopping, and user-generated content, all accordioned together in an endless feed—our consumer habits have reached a fever pitch. Each week, we are asking Coveteur staff members about what they consumed this past week, and connecting the dots on our consumer behavior with a trendspotting Venn diagram.

With both Venus and Mercury in retrograde during August’s rare Super Blue Moon, we’re all feeling a bit frenzied, emotional, and tongue-tied. When the planets seem to be conspiring against you, sometimes all you can do is surrender to your creature comforts and treat yourself to a little self-care consumerism. From movies to home decor to news articles, here are all the chic, riveting, and, dare I say, horny content the Coveteur staff consumed this past week:

1. Boarderie Charcuterie Board

“Putting a charcuterie board together always sounds like a great idea until it’s 30 minutes before your guests arrive and you’re still attempting to fold slices of soppressata into the shape of a rose. I recently discovered Boarderie’s variety of ready-to-ship and fully assembled charcuterie boards, and while I was initially skeptical about receiving cheese via FedEx, we should know by now to never question one of Oprah's Favorite Things. The board arrived perfectly chilled and ready to serve, securing Boarderie a spot as my new go-to.”— Caroline Dunn (Manager of Sales & Brand Partnerships)

2. Bottoms the Movie

“Landing somewhere between Superbad and Heathers, Bottoms is about two gay, high school losers who—following a rumor that they went to juvie over the summer—start an all-female fight club to impress their popular girl crushes. The plot is thin, but the over-the-top dialogue and situational comedy let you know they are well aware of that fact. As a longtime fan of Rachel Sennott and Ayo Edibiri, I’m happy to see them join forces again for something so gay, horny, and unapologetically stupid.” — Andie Eisen (Culture Editor)

“Following the typical highs and lows of a new age romcom, Bottoms tells the story of two queer best friends who start an all-girls fight club at their school in an effort to get laid before graduation. With Ayo Edebiri and Rachel Sennott as the movie’s stars, I had pretty high expectations for ridiculously cheeky one-liners and a few solid laugh-out-loud moments. The 94% Rotten Tomatoes score had me convinced I would love it, too, but I’m bummed to report it was simply just fine. Definitely still worth a watch, but maybe save your $18 and wait ‘til this one’s on streaming services.”— Emily Greene (Marketing Strategy Director)

3. Revival Pink Striped Rug

“I recently bought the 6x9 version of this striped rug from Revival Rugs for my new apartment. I have beige walls and a white couch, so I wanted something more lively and modern to offset. (And I have since added a slim vertical stripe green armchair, because why not?)” — Camille Freestone (Senior Style Editor)

4. Champagne with Chris Evert & MRK

“Leading up to the US Open, I celebrated my favorite part of tennis—diamonds—with Chris Evert & Monica Rich Kosann at the Wilson boutique in Columbus Circle. While my own attempt at a tennis serve might put cars and onlookers at risk, I’m thrilled that I can still stack these topaz, sapphire, emerald, and diamond tennis bracelets like a pro. P.S.: 50% of all proceeds from MRK's pink sapphire bezel set tennis bracelet will be donated to the Prevent Cancer Foundation.”— Leya Kaufman (Head of Brand, Publisher & VP of Sales)

5. Lana Del Rey Modeling Ponchos

“Someone flipping through a magazine of knitting patterns titled ‘24 Ponchos: Cozy Chill Chasers You’ll Love to Knit’ came across a series of knitwear allegedly modeled by none other than Miss Lana Del Rey (FKA Lizzy Grant). After turning their discovery into a viral TikTok, the poncho pics made rounds on the internet. Huge win for the poncho community.” — Andie Eisen (Culture Editor)

6. Snow Angel by Renee Rapp

“Since the release of Renee’s EP (and her Sex Lives of College Girls debut), I have been anxiously awaiting her debut album. Highlights of the album include the modern day ‘Better than Revenge’ style, 'Poison Poison,' and the heartbreaking namesake 'Snow Angel.’”— Paige Kowal (Associate Account Manager)

7. Vintage Alessi Tea Kettles on eBay

“After Matteau co-founder recommended an Alessi tea kettle on AirMail's ‘My Favorite Things’ column, I've been endlessly searching for used versions on eBay. I'm partial to the retro-futuristic conical shape, and the chrome feels so delicious in an Italian modernist sort of way. Now, I just have to remember which ones I’ve bid on.”— Camille Freestone (Senior Style Editor)

8. Natura Bissé Diamond Cocoon Sheer Eye

“I've been wearing this Natura Bissé eye cream every day. It’s lightweight and makes my dark circles fade away–my under-eyes appear nice and bright! I wear this in lieu of concealer paired with a little cream blush to feel a bit more put together. Definitely worth the splurge.”— Samantha Wu (Marketing Coordinator)

9. David Hockney’s Portrait of Harry Styles

“As a longtime fan of David Hockney but an armchair critic of pop heart-throb Harry Styles, this was a collab that had me doing a double-take. If you know Hockney’s work, you know he’s not much of a realist when it comes to portraiture, opting more to capture the ‘essence’ of his subject. In this case, it’s clear that Styles’ essence comes in the form of a dramatically receding hairline and a mismatched goatee. Fans of Styles and those unfamiliar with Hockney’s work were quick to call it a ‘botched job.’ I can’t think of any two people with less crossover in the cultural Venn diagram, but it’s certainly going to give the tour guides in the National Portrait Gallery something new to talk about.” – Andie Eisen (Culture Editor)

10. Liis Bo Perfume

“Every time I wear this perfume on a first date, I get asked on a second one. The perfume is a nuanced blend of woody and warm notes with a hint of spice. I like to think of it as the slip dress of my fragrance wardrobe—it manages to feel comfortable and sexy at the same time. The perfume’s smokier notes immediately evoke a mood; it reminds me of smoking cigarettes in Paris’s 11th arrondissement with friends, both old and new, outside a buzzing cafe.” – Ama Kwarteng (Beauty Director)
