The Wildest Hair and Makeup Looks from Milan Fashion Week

The Italians never leave us disappointed.

Milan Fashion Week has yet again given us a multitude of excuses to drain our bank accounts for the season ahead. And given that Italian designers tend to have a flair for the dramatic, we were also treated to glamorous hair and makeup looks all over the runways. Think everything from glitter explosions to braided buns inspired by pastries! Boring they were not—these were the three most outrageous hair and makeup looks from Milan this season.

Hair artist Jawara is known for creating dreamlike editorial designs, and his showing at Emilio Pucci was no exception. Inspired by the late ’90s hairstyles from rapper Lil Kim—who used to stencil fashion labels like Versace and CHANEL onto her signature wigs—the stylist designed custom stencils and sprayed an array of electric blue and hot pink designs onto the models’ stick-straight platinum or lavender hair. The effect was equal parts edgy and whimsical, especially paired with the collections eye-popping color palette.

When we saw the trails of glitter melting down the models’ faces at the Marni show—as if they had walked through a particularly exuberant rainshower—our first instict was to book it to the nearest craft store. Multidisciplinary artist Julien d’Ys created the look, painting on a custom creation for each model to better capture the Alice in Wonderland theme of the show. For a material that can often lean girlish, the glitter in this case felt almost aggressive, a testament to the force of the woman wearing it along with a stunning leather patchwork dress or trench coat.

A fabulous outfit and equally glam up-do is a signature Italian aesthetic, and Fendi delivered. Sam McKnight revealed that in order to not let the collection’s padded headbands feel too precious, he created complex-looking buns inspired by none other than braided pastries and pretzels. They’re also slightly Star Wars princess-inspired, so that they feel elegant and sculptural but never overly ladylike (especially since the headbands were worn upside down). Paired with a collection that had several of our editors saying so long to our savings, it was a true feast for the eyes like only Milan Fashion Week can deliver.
