A Buyer’s Guide to Packing for Any Summer Getaway

It’s amazing how quickly your summer schedule can fill up. Before you know it, you’ve reserved each (hopefully long) weekend for a trip to the beach, a jaunt upstate, or a new city exploration. Once the booking is done, the inevitable packing comes along. And unless you’re a seasoned professional, this process can sometimes prove troublesome.

We’ve asked Jodi Kahn, senior director, divisional merchandise manager of women’s designer ready-to-wear at Neiman Marcus, for a bit of guidance. “Regardless of what’s on your agenda this summer, any event is considered an opportunity to wear something glamorous!” she tells Coveteur. “The best way to embrace the season’s carefree spirit and reconnect with your most stylish self is to incorporate color and playful accessories into your looks. She continues, “From refreshing variations of woven handbags to whimsical jewelry, a standout piece is the ultimate way to enhance a look without trying too hard.” Continue scrolling to discover her essentials for any destination.

The Beach

Factors to Consider:

“It’s important to remember that sun, salt, and chlorine can dry out your skin and damage your hair. Even though I love beachy waves, it’s important to pack nourishing skin and hair products that protect your locks. Use an SPF and don’t forget to reapply every few hours.”

Key Pieces:

“Sunglasses, scarves, and chic hats are not only fashionable, but also protect you from the rays especially when you’re swimming or out at sea! I’d also suggest packing swimwear that has matching cover-ups like dresses or matching sets you can mix and match in your suitcase to add versatility to your wardrobe.”

Specific Recommendations:

“I love packing a good pair of cat-eye sunglasses like this pair from Dior. Pareo scarves continue to be a functional and fashionable summer accessory, this logo stripe one from Balenciaga captures the feel of coastal ease. Of course, it’s important to have a stylish swimsuit when visiting St. Barts. This bikini set and matching coverup from Rebecca Vallance is one of my favorites for the beach and pool.

Not only does a vacation allow you to travel to new places, it’s also the perfect opportunity to shake up your beauty regimen. Keep your skin luminous in the sun with this well-loved shimmering body oil from Tom Ford and after-sun emulsion from Bellefontaine.”

The City

Factors to Consider:

“To prevent overpacking, be consistent with a theme and color story so that your pieces can be worn together or separately. It's easier if you eliminate footwear or clothing that doesn’t fit your aesthetic. Commit to a look and stick with it!”

Key Pieces:

“Nothing signals the summer season more than a breezy, versatile dress. There are many ways to style a maxi dress, making it an essential item to pack for a vacation wardrobe. It’s easy and creates a polished look when paired with neutral accessories. Add a white denim jacket for a casual layered look for cooler evenings. I also love a raffia tote that pairs seamlessly with cover-ups and fancier outfits.”

Specific Recommendations:

“This Studio189 shirtdress and this Gabriela Hearst crochet maxi dress are both lightweight dresses that can be styled for day or night. I’d pair them with this Loewe x Paula’s Ibiza Straw Tote and these metallic flat sandals from Fendi for an effortlessly chic, brunch-to-dinner look that is perfect for Mexico City.

I also love the sunless bronzed look that the Dolce Glow self-tanner offers from celebrity-favorite brand by Isabel Alysa. It’s made with a natural and organic formula that is beneficial to your skin’s health and offers one of the best solutions on the market.”

Nature

Mahary Utility Pants

Veronica Beard
$348

Macadamia Set

The Upside
$220

Factors to Consider:

“When traveling in nature, I like to pack for flexibility and include laid-back styles. Comfortable footwear and activewear that is both stylish and has a technical fit are a must for any summer adventure. I’d also suggest packing lightweight pieces that are easily layered for cooler mornings or nights. Always check the weather, as it may vary greatly throughout the day in the summer. My advice is to always pack a raincoat. No one wants to be caught in the rain unprepared!”

Key Pieces:

“A chic, white sneaker is a year-round necessity in my wardrobe, but specifically I’d pack a pair that works especially well with denim shorts or a flowy dress. Having a nourishing sunscreen on hand is also crucial if you’re planning to spend most of your day outside.”

Specific Recommendations:

“These iconic Prada sneakers will elevate a casual look and still offer comfort, making them a must-have shoe for destinations where you’ll mostly be outdoors. I love these utility pants from Veronica Beard and crop frayed jeans from Mother Denim that are also favored among our customers. Activewear is a must-pack when traveling upstate for spontaneous hiking or yoga, this matching crop top and legging set from The Upside is one of my favorites.

Suncare is especially important in the summer. I'm excited to try this luxurious and efficacious sunscreen from Revive, which features advanced UV protection to protect the skin. Having high-quality luggage is very important when traveling as well. This multiwheel suitcase from Rimowa is both durable and lightweight. It’s also roomy enough to fit heavier shoes and accessories.”
