To the surprise of many, hair botox has nothing to do with injections. Hair botox is a deep conditioning treatment that hydrates and conditions the hair and seals split ends. “It smooths out the hair cuticle resulting in smoother, sleeker hair,” says Sade' Milinda, a hair expert and Sally Hershberger stylist based in New York City. “I think you will see a lot of people transitioning from keratin treatments to hair botox in the near future. You'll notice a shine, softness, and less breakage, plus it’s safe to use alongside chemical treatments.” If you're curious about the treatment, keep reading for everything you need to know about hair botox and whether or not it’s right for you.

What Does a Hair Botox Treatment Do?

“The antioxidants and oils in the formula help protect against free radical damage that can make hair look dull while also adding moisture to soften and seal the hair cuticle,” says Milinda. “The collagen helps repair damaged hair and eliminates frizz.”

Depending on your hair texture and desired result, hair botox is left in your hair anywhere from 30 to 40 minutes. After rinsing out the product, your stylist will blow-dry and straighten the hair to reveal a more sleek and smooth finish.

How Is Hair Botox Different From a Keratin Treatment?

Keratin treatments are formulated with an ingredient called formaldehyde, which rearranges the chemical makeup of the hair, says Milinda. Hair botox, on the other hand, infuses the hair with hydrating and strengthening ingredients. While the specific ingredients in hair botox differ depending on what brand your stylist prefers, according to Milinda, the formulations typically include vitamins B5 and E, caviar oil, and a collagen complex.

What Are the Benefits of Hair Botox?

Because coloring or bleaching your hair can leave it feeling dry and looking dull, hair botox is great for anyone with color-treated hair. Just make sure to wait at least two weeks after your dye job to get hair botox. “You want to let your color settle first so the deep conditioning treatment doesn’t affect it,” explains Milinda.

Hair botox is also great for people struggling with breakage or damage from styling or heat tools because the collagen in the formula helps to strengthen weak strands. And because it helps seal split ends, blocks out humidity, and infuses strands with hydration, hair botox is also an option to consider if you want to extend the time in between haircuts or blowouts. “I recommend hair botox to my clients who like to blow out their natural hair and want it to last longer than three days,” says Milinda. Since hair botox adds moisture to dry hair, it can also make thick, curly hair easier to manage.

How Long Does Hair Botox Last?

A hair botox treatment will last around two to three months. To preserve the treatment for as long as possible, be sure to ask your stylist what hair botox brand they used so they can recommend a shampoo and conditioner that pairs well with it.

The Final Word

If your hair is in need of some TLC, hair botox can infuse the necessary ingredients to help repair damage, smooth frizz, and keep your hair hydrated, all without compromising the hair's natural texture.
