Headwear in general has been recently re-established as the perfect statement-maker this year. We’ve taken note of the bandana and square scarf surge and were awed by the extravagant hats worn at this year's Met Gala. Now, we are adding something very specific to our wishlists: crochet caps.

This year’s Copenhagen Fashion Week really secured crochet caps as a trend of the moment, with various colors, embroideries, and embellishments adding a retro or bohemian element to many street style stars’ looks. Additionally, these looks and the caps paired with them, in particular, served as a reminder that experimenting with clashing aesthetics is (almost) always a good idea.

If Copenhagen Fashion Week secured crochet caps as a trend, Lera Abova’s recent look was a reaffirmation. At a screening for her new film “Honey Don’t” at Metrograph in the Lower East Side, Abova completed her all-black look with a black crochet sequin embossed cap. Her look, overall, was sleek: black pants with a subtle flare, a silky black top with puffy shoulders and a peplum hem, and simple black pumps, with the cap adding a textural bohemian element and a little pizzazz.

Crochet has always held a special place in the fashion world. Women spent a lot of time crocheting hats, scarves, and ear muffs to send to soldiers during both World Wars, and the Cloche hat, often crocheted, was a fad in the ‘20s. The ‘60s and ‘70s, the rejection of mass produced items, and people’s connection to and concern for mother earth popularized crochet from head to toe. During this time, people were more drawn and connected to things that were handmade and less concerned about brand names and status. With such a rich history, it’s no surprise that crochet accessories continue to be popular.

With luxury brands putting their spin on the trend–BODE, who have been on the crochet trend since 2022, with a flapper-inspired style, and Rabanne, who released both classic and beaded styles throughout 2024 and 2025–it’s safe to say that it’s time for us to all indulge.
