When it comes to self-care, Neada Deters prefers simple yet nourishing rituals. As the founder of organic skin-care label Lesse, her natural approach to beauty is often reflected in her everyday routine. Whether it’s a quick dance party in her kitchen or venturing outdoors for a midday reprieve, this beauty guru understands the value in little moments of self-care. Read below as she walks us through her favorite practices, and then shop must-have products.
What activities and/or products do you love to lift your spirits and alleviate stress?
“I phone a friend—or relative! This one is actually scientific. Hearing the voice of someone you love lights up the same neurological pathways as a hug, mitigating stress. I also have a voicemail from my grandmother saved. She passed away a few years ago, but I still sometimes listen to it. I also prefer to send voice notes over texts with some of my closest friends. The other greatest mood booster is to disconnect from screens and get outside, even if it’s just for a quick walk. Unplugging for a few hours and getting some vitamin D works wonders on all of us.”
What activities and/or products do you love to take care of your body?
“I have tried so many different workouts during lockdown, but only a few have stuck: Fluidform Pilates, Sky Ting Yoga, running intervals with my dog, and dancing in my kitchen. I have this new thing where I play a song on our speakers as soon as I wake up and move a little first thing. It feels so good to set that tone for the day. Eating local and organic is also one of the best things I do for my body and skin.”

If you have an entire day to yourself, without any responsibilities, where are you and what are you doing?
“When I have an entire day, and if there aren’t the concerns of a pandemic, I’ll leave the city. A day trip to Ojai or down the coast, or into the desert. I will wake up before dawn and drive home in the early hours of the morning if I have to, but I love to experience very non-everyday things whenever possible. I have certain rituals—for self-care, in particular—but I’m not a fan of routine.”
What are your five to 10 must-have products for self-care and beauty?
Are there any special (or unusual) self-care or beauty practices that you swear by?
“I try to only use a cleanser once a day, at night. In the morning I’ll usually rub an ice cube across my face, neck, and décolleté instead. It hydrates and awakens skin, encouraging blood flow, which alleviates puffiness and reduces flare-ups and breakouts. An incredible aesthetician in Paris told me she swore by this practice, and it definitely has a huge impact on my skin. I also take time to lie on an acupressure mat a few times a week. I have scoliosis and usually get acupuncture every few weeks, but the mat has been a great stand-in during the lockdown.”
