“Small businesses have been hit hard by the pandemic, with many jobs lost and many companies fighting to stay afloat. I haven’t been buying much these days beyond necessities, but in cases when I have purchased something nonessential, I’ve been mindful of who and what I want my money to support right now—which has led me to shopping pretty much exclusively from small, independently owned brands. It’s been a privilege to support small brands I love during this challenging time, and I plan on continuing to do so during the holiday season both in terms of gifts I’m buying for family members and my own ‘wish list.’ Even in non-pandemic times, my family doesn’t usually do a lot of presents, but I still enjoy the excuse to get creative with gift ideas—even if it’s something homemade (I’m a big fan of gifting people long letters where I write down everything I love about them.
