These Transitional Staples Will Carry You Through Finicky Spring Weather

For those days when you experience all four seasons in a 24-hour period.

collage of transitional staples to wear

It’s that time of year when the weather in a single day can effectively span all four seasons. Winter in the morning, summer in the late afternoon, with spring and fall sprinkled somewhere in between. A conundrum in and of itself, getting dressed for said temperature spectrum only adds to the confusion. For a little guidance, we’ve asked our staff to reveal their favorite transitional weather staples. Maybe this: For some, that's a workwear-inspired denim shacket (a removable layer for those days of patchy sunshine). For others, it's a sharply-hued pair of socks to armor your ankles against that New York windchill. Continue scrolling to discover the full sartorial roster.

Printed Jersey Top

For the days where the weather can’t make up its mind, I love wearing a light turtleneck with a colorful print like this one from Acne. With material that’s thin enough to withstand the random sunny 60-degree days, but warm enough to hold up against a bitter windchill, consider it the ultimate ‘temperamental weather’ companion.

High-Rise Cargo Pants

I recently bought (almost) everything from Gabriela Karefa-Johnson’s new collection with Future Collective, and when I tell you these cargo pants are a game changer—truly, I’m shook. Super comfortable, flattering, and lightweight, they’re perfect for every season (even in the winter when you throw a pair of heattech leggings on underneath.)

Gelso Oversized Grain de Poudre Blazer

I know spring is right around the corner when I start gravitating towards color again—and this oversized blazer is no exception. Perfect for those chillier days when you’re sick of bundling in your winter coat, throw this over a knit sweater or long-sleeved tee for a bit of brightness and coverage to combat the fickle weather (and the seasonal depression you’ve been fighting).

Organic Cotton Longshirt

For me, getting dressed for transitional weather is all about layering. I love to have staples like the above striped shirt from Closed Official. I love that I can bundle up with a sweater or jacket, or throw it on with a pair of shorts and sandals come warmer temps.

Leather Pencil Skirt

As I continue my quest to eliminate “seasons” from my wardrobe (for the most part, at least), I love looking for things that I can actually wear all year long. I’ve been coveting this leather pencil skirt from Raey for quite some time now. For winter, I envision it with a pair of tights and an oversized knit. For summer, I’ll swap the sweater for a t-shirt, nix the tights, and add a sneaker.

The Yves Sock

As soon as the threat of snow leaves the weather forecast, I am itching to pull out the warm-weather footwear that has laid dormant all winter. That desire is unfortunately not always conducive to 50-degree temperatures. Enter: the sock. And this season, I’m switching up my typical neutral hues for a shocking scarlet.

Ansie Boot

I have been on the hunt for the perfect brown boot for years and I finally found them—just in time for transitional weather. The sleek square toe looks perfect peeking out from beneath a baggy jean leg, but they also can hold their own with a skirt or a dress.

Swing Cardigan

The unpredictable weather of New York winter and spring makes it nearly impossible to leave the house without layers. Throwing on a cardigan can transform an outfit from the cold streets to the heated office.

The ReNew Quilted Mid-length Liner

Jackets can be tricky in transitional seasons, but the key to this spring essential is it's ability to layer under and over a coat. Luckily, a quilted jacket (and its corresponding jacket liner) has become a trend in itself. It adds enough warmth on its own to get you through 55-degree days, but the silhouette is loose enough to layer over your favorite chunky sweater when the temp is close to freezing.

Chloe Top

Sustainable knits reign supreme in my spring wardrobe. I firmly believe that white t-shirts can lay the foundation for every great look—this top proves it.

Ivy Pied De Poule Mules

As soon as the weather starts to hover around the mid-fifties, I ditch my boots for mules on date night. I’m also in love with this versatile woven houndstooth pair from the hottest new sustainable luxury footwear line, Prota Fiori.

Denim Shirt Jacket

While I might be a Millennial, I’m stealing silhouettes from Gen Z. Enter: oversized everything. This is the weather-proof and future-proof denim shacket of my dreams.

Pleated Tapered Leg Button-hem Trousers

Lately, I’ve focused on buying investment pieces versus fast fashion that will tear apart at the seams by next season. These McQueen military trousers exemplify everything I’m looking for when curating a conscious wardrobe. I love that I can wear them year round, and dress them up with a tailored blazer or dress down with an oversized tee.

Oversized Stripe Shirt

My love for blue & white striped shirts continues. What can I say? They make me happy (which is exactly how your ensemble should make you feel). Tommy Hilfiger’s oversized striped shirt does exactly that! Rain or shine, I can throw this on and feel like my best self!

Cropped Shirt

Most days, you will catch me wearing an oversized top, but sometimes I like to shake it up. I’m obsessed with Celine’s cropped denim shirt. It cinches in all the right places, and it provides me with the option to roll up my sleeves on hot days, or leave them long on “I don’t understand the weather” days.

Speculus Midi Dress

This maxi dress was basically made for those unpredictable days of transitional weather. I don’t usually reach for prints in my closet, but this one manages to feel like a neutral while making a statement at the same time.

The Favorite Pant Pleat Pants

The aptly named “Favorite Pant” is one of the most versatile pieces in my wardrobe. After becoming very familiar with my collection of chunky boots, these pants will soon be meeting my much wider collection of statement sandals—and staying in rotation all throughout spring.

Soft Lounge Long Sleeve Dress

I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again, Kim K. does not miss when it comes to the fabrics and cuts of every piece from SKIMS. The brand’s lounge dresses are positively seasonless, and I won’t be giving this one a break anytime soon.

Cruise Lace Up

This new footwear brand uniquely merges athletic performance with effortless style. These sneakers elevate any outfit and I can’t wait to pair mine with a chic tank dress and leather blazer. The Cruise Lace-Up is my absolute favorite and comes in the best neutrals. The style is elevated and genderless so I will be adding a pair to cart for my husband, too.

Tie-Front Cutout Maxi Dress

This crisp, lightweight dress is perfect for dressing to wear from day into evening. While it comes in a gorgeous raspberry, my favorite color is black as it can be dressy or casual. I love that I can wear it with everything from boots and a leather jacket to show-stopping heels or even sneakers and wedges on the weekend. Extra bonus—it comes in petite and has pockets!

Coco Crush Ring

Right in time for spring, Chanel delivered a gorgeous fine jewelry collection. These pieces are inspired by the brand’s signature quilted motif and the Coco Crush Ring is at the top of my splurge-worthy wish list. It’s perfect to layer with a diamond band or simply worn alone. I find that chic and modern jewelry is the perfect way to transition from one season to the next. Regardless, this will be a lifelong keepsake.
