In Defense of the Ultra Baggy Pant

We’re never going back to skinny jeans.

Between the return of the ballet flat and the perhaps overhyped indie sleaze revival, a skinny jeans resurgence looms, albeit threateningly, on the horizon waiting for someone like Bella Hadid to experiment with a pair. But until then, I will relish in the absence of seam impression marks along my legs. While I have mainly relied on straight-leg and bootcut denim in the aftermath of my 10-year-long skinny jean phase, ultra baggy pants have recently dominated my Instagram feed. (I've been inspired to pick up vintage men’s Levi’s from my local thrift store.) As is the case with most items in my wardrobe, a healthy dose of styling inspiration resolved my hesitancy around baggy jeans' potential for frumpiness. Here, I’ve gathered some of those references so you too can experience the liberation and comfort of a loose pant before the “jegging” reenters our lexicon.

This look is for the My Year of Rest and Relaxation girlies. Just kidding, though the Uggs and general rolled-out-of-bed-looking-like-a-model-for-the-Row vibe is not far from what I envisioned of the narrator at the novel’s beginning. This look is relaxed, comfortable, and luxurious—perfect for an early morning dog walk (or grabbing two coffees from your corner bodega).

Olive Cargo Pants + White Tee + Burgundy Jacket

This combination is excellent because it is super laidback and casual, but way cooler than my usual jeans and t-shirt running-around-outfit. And the olive, burgundy, and orange color palette is perfect for the onset of fall.

Another example of the way color and texture can make casual dressing a fun sartorial opportunity, knits, suede, and corduroy are great to experiment with as the weather gets colder.

Blazer + Leather Vest + Jeans

This outfit makes a strong case for layering a vest over a blazer—a choice I have never in my life seen before. If you are worried about getting lost in all of the fabric, wear a healed boot under the jeans to add a bit of height.
