An Ode to the Pairing of Navy & Black
A slightly subversive color combination we can't get enough of.

There are a lot of preconceived notions about things you "shouldn't" wear—colors that don't go together or shades forbidden after a certain date. When getting dressed in 2021, you really should pay no mind to any of these outdated rules. In fact, the act of mixing these taboo things into your ensembles is what makes for an interesting style. Of said illicit pairings, our current favorite is that of navy and black.

There's an old mentality that you can't wear similar colors, such as blue and black, together. Luckily, the concept of tonal dressing has disbanded this idea, subverting the concept into something desirable versus abhorrent. A favorite pairing of Phoebe Philo during her Céline years, the coupling of specifically navy and black can now often be seen on the runways of Dior by way of Maria Grazia Chiuri and Dion Lee.
Those who count themselves fans of the color combination often mix in denim or crisp pops of white—simple additives so as not to complicate the look. If you aren't ready to layer the colors against each other, break up the shades with a bare leg or pair of jeans in between. If you want to add in another color, we suggest either staying within the blue family or selecting something totally different—a rich brown or pink.
