Each zodiac element—fire, earth, air, and water—share dominant traits that help determine our style preferences; that insight can help guide us when it comes to picking the nail color or the nail design that's a perfect match.

Ahead, I spoke to astrologer Alice Bell to create a list of nail art designs that best fit each zodiac element's specific traits.

Fire Signs

Aries, Leo, Sagittarius

For fire signs, Bell recommends leaning towards bright colors like a bright red or a fiery orange. "Fire signs will probably feel comfortable with a design that makes a statement or is a little bit more flashy," she adds. Glitter nail polish hues, wavy lines, and printed patterns are also a potential design option for Leo and Sagittarius, says Bell.

Earth Signs

Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn

Earth signs are likely to feel at-home with more neutral hues—including clean, clear nail polish—and classic designs. "They want really practical, work-friendly nail colors," says Bell. "They'll find that traditional nail styles like a French manicure are a good fit," she adds.

Air Signs

Gemini, Libra, Aquarius

Aquarius and Gemini are two signs that are willing to follow nail trends and try out bold, "out-there" designs that others may shy away from, notes Bell. Libra is sort of the odd one out when it comes to the air signs—because they appreciate art and beauty, they're willing to dip a toe into the fun and quirky designs, but they'll keep their nail art more tame than an Aquarius or a Gemini.

Water Signs

Scorpio, Pisces, Cancer

"Scorpio is drawn to dark colors," says Bell, but that doesn't necessarily mean black nail polish; it could be a deep red shade or an inky green hue. According to Bell, Pisces are drawn to similar tones: "I'd recommend something like a shimmery purple for Pisces," says Bell. Cancer is the sign most drawn to nostalgia, so trends from the past, like smiley faces from the '90s, would be a good fit, adds Bell.
