We're eternally grateful to last season's Copenhagen Fashion Week for putting us onto the little crochet cap. Now that their Fall/Winter season has come to an end, something has been made very clear: Copenhagen's affinity for crochet will seemingly persist for all time. Show goers moved around the notably sustainable city in crochet accessories and sweaters in the most vibrant of colors, a direct reflection of the city itself—an emerald green bonnet style balaclava, a matching duvet-like cardigan and bucket-style hat, and a series of crochet caps, some bare and some embellished, catching my eye in particular.

It's not at all surprising that the European city backing sustainability in all forms would embrace handmade goods while supporting small businesses—crochet is also arguably one of the most seasonally versatile design styles. Think cozy and chunky hats and cold-weather accessories in the fall and winter, and loose dresses, beach coverups, bags, and tops for the spring and summer.

Crochet surged in the 1800s as a way of emulating and creating the illusion of expensive and highly sought after materials such as lace. Soon, it was considered a cool hobby and suitable way for women, in particular, to pass time. What was once a way of creating garments that replicated those with hefty price tags has more recently received high fashion approval.

With us collectively trying to turn towards slow fashion and Gen Z in particularly beginning to pay more attention to sustainability, ethical practices, and saying no to fast fashion at all costs, high-end design houses are following suit—and reminding us that while crochet may be keeping us warm this winter, it also has the power to keep us looking and feeling cool throughout the spring and summer. Etro and Balmain's Spring/Summer 2026 collections featured two piece crochet sets consisting of a skirt and top that have us dreaming about a summer day in Greece.

Over at Diotima and Burberry, crochet dresses in bold hues and featuring embellishments and sequins had us dreaming of a summer night in Ibiza. But, until our toes finally get the opportunity to touch sand, we'll be staying cozy in our crochet balaclavas waiting out the rest of this New York City winter.
