What We Consumed This Week: From $55 Bagels to Gas Station Sunglasses

Welcome to Coveteur’s Consumer Diaries! As our co-dependent relationship with the algorithm deepens with time, the bottomless scroll has turned us all into 24/7 consumers. As we consume varying degrees of news, targeted ads, trailers, shopping, and user-generated content, all accordioned together in an endless feed—our consumer habits have reached a fever pitch. Each week we will be untangling the top news stories of the week and asking Coveteur staff members about what they consumed this past week.

Weekly Wrap

This week in culture news…

In classic Instagram fashion, my timeline this week has given me whiplash between the news of global devastation and celebrity gossip memes. Congratulations to wide-eyed fashion maven Ashley Olsen for secretly welcoming her new baby, Otto, to the world earlier this week. Also, compliments to Britney Spears for getting her new divorcée Sam Asgari to sign a prenup before their wedding last year (and props to Octavia Spencer for seeing that from a mile away). Keep wearing low-rise shorts and twirling Brit! In other good news, Trump was indicted by a Grand Jury in Georgia for his attempts to overturn the 2020 election. As his fourth indictment, this amounts to a total of 91 charges in four criminal cases. Will this have any bearing on the 2024 election? Only time will tell.

If you are able (before browsing the sartorial fluff of our consumer diaries), please donate to the generational families of Lahaina that have been displaced by the Maui wildfires here.

Consumer Diaries

From podcasts to shopping to media, we asked Coveteur staff to send their top recommendations for what they consumed this past week.

Van Cleef & Arpels Sagittarius Zodiaque Medal: “It's not even remotely Sagittarius season yet, but I can't stop thinking about it. Like any passionate fire sign, I'm planning ahead for my birthday, so I’m keeping this one bookmarked.” —Leya Kaufman (Head of Brand - Publisher & VP of Sales)

Telemarketers on HBO Max: “My friend described this to me as an ‘HBO doc about telemarketers that the Safdie Brothers produced.’ Initially, it all sounded a little too @nolitadirtbag, but man oh man, after watching the first episode, I am hooked. Unlike most true crime mini-series, they don’t waste any time telling the nuanced and somehow action-packed story of two telemarketers making a documentary to expose the corrupt inner workings of a decades-long scam. Complete with ex-convicts, shady police organizations, and bags of heroin, this documentary is full-tilt madness and totally riveting. I hope they can keep up the momentum in the subsequent episodes.”—Andie Eisen (Culture Editor)

Pop Up Bagels x Caviar Kaspia: “Did I ever think I would buy a ticket a week in advance to try a bagel? No. Did I willingly do it? Yes. All of my friends have been raving about Pop Up Bagels, each claiming they were the first ones to learn about ‘the best bagels in the city.’ When my sister visited last weekend and mentioned she was on her way to the Mark Hotel to sample the Pop Up Bagels x Caviar Kaspia, I finally caved. I got my hands on the $55 bagel (yes, you read that right), and I have to admit, they were pretty amazing. I highly recommend if you’re in the mood to head uptown and splurge”—Lauren Malanga (Campaign Manager)

And Just Like That… (Season 2): “As a fan of Sex and the City since high school, I decided it was finally time to give AJLT a chance. As I’m sitting here, typing on my laptop, I couldn’t help but wonder…can the magic of a great love be recaptured twenty years later? Or is that too much pressure to put on a sitcom reboot? Spoiler alert: It is. While the season becomes only slightly less cloying as the episodes progress and the writing fumbles closer to SATC standards, it still pales in comparison.” —Andie Eisen (Culture Editor)

Emporio Armani’s Pre-Fall Collection in Soho: “Emporio Armani's new Soho boutique just opened four blocks away from Coveteur HQ. As a result, I'm already overhauling my spring/summer wardrobe in favor of the hottest drop of pre-fall workwear basics I've ever seen. I'm starting with these EA Technical Cady Trousers.” —Leya Kaufman (Head of Brand - Publisher & VP of Sales)

The Modern Age by the Strokes: “I'm going to see The Strokes in concert this weekend so naturally, I've been falling into a deep dark, angsty hole—a.k.a. listening to their entire discography. I stand by my 16-year-old self's statement that The Modern Age is one of the best songs ever made.”—Camille Freestone (Senior Style Editor)

Gas Station Sunglasses: “On a trip with my friends to a town in NorCal called Graegle (I don’t know how to pronounce it either), we found ourselves in the middle of gorgeous crystal-blue lakes and vaguely Trumpy, American-flag-t-shirt-wearing town residents. Something about the situation made me tune into some kind of Lana Del Rey frequency, and I was suddenly compelled to buy a pair of Oakley-esque $9 sunglasses at a local gas station. I don’t look good, but I feel great.” —Andie Eisen (Culture Editor)

Teak New York Teddy Sofa: “I'm in the process of shopping for a new couch and found this adult version of a nugget—those children’s play-foam objects. The couch is gorgeous and sustainably made in Copenhagen but also functions as an entirely customizable mattress giving you the flexibility of a mattress for movie night or the world's chicest sleeper mattress. I'm obsessed and might be pulling the trigger soon.”— Sarah Lou Kiernan (Social Editor)

Charlotte Tilburry Serum & Magic Cream Kit: “We all know beauty is skin deep and starts with the perfect skincare regimen. This supercharged kit has stepped up my skincare routine and gives me a youthful glow. The Crystal Elixer is a game changer, and there is even a Glow Toner and Collagen Infused Face Oil. Add a smile to the mix, and your glow will carry you to the next season.”— Patricia Foster (Executive Beauty Director)

Dieux Angel Eyes: “There’s something about a daily beauty ritual that makes me feel both girlish and quietly fabulous. Dieux makes these incredible reusable under-eye masks (in classic green and angel pattern) that are not only adorable but a sustainable alternative to disposable sheet masks. Paired with the plumping, smoothing, and hydrating Auracle gel, these two fade fine lines and puffiness with maximum absorption. You can also use the eye masks with any of your preferred eye creams.” —Andie Eisen (Culture Editor)

Jo Loves Pomelo: “Iconic Jo Loves fragrance transports you to white sandy beaches to get the most out of these remaining days of summer. The grapefruit-infused scent is refreshing and energizing—it can even be applied with a fragrance paintbrush.”—Patricia Foster (Executive Beauty Director)
