How 7 Staffers Are Updating Their Homes for Fall

From fancy mattresses to checkered rugs.

Decor
fall home decor updates
Our home renovation and update madness continues, and to be quite honest, we’re not upset about it. There’s something so satisfying about creating a comfortable living space—especially since we’re also working, exercising, and entertaining (our pets and roommates) in them. Consider it early-stage hibernation for the winter, with a new candle, or vacuum, or set of sheets bringing us all the joy we need to get through the rest of 2020. So what are we shopping for, decor and home improvement-wise, these days? Find out what living essentials seven of our staffers have picked up over the last few weeks.

Casper Wave Hybrid Mattress in Queen

There’s something about being in my 30s that has made me want to invest in a really nice mattress. Besides sleeping being one of my all-time favorite activities, I also share the space with another human and a very large cat, so it seemed like a wise choice for all three of us. This Casper mattress has gel pods, as well as a combination of foam and springs, to keep you cool and minimize aches and pains (something else that happens when you reach 30). It’s truly the best self-care you can give yourself.

Dyson V11 Outsize Cordless Vacuum

I’ll blame this on getting older again, but wow, do you know how exciting it is to have a super fancy vacuum? Listen, if you have a pet, or you like to cook, or you just live in your apartment or house, you must have one of these Dyson styles. I squealed when the box arrived—it really makes your life that much easier (and cleaner).

$800

Loewe Medium Honeysuckle Candle

Of course Jonathon Anderson creates this season’s must-have candle. Would you expect anything less? The honeysuckle scent is divine, and honestly, I can’t wait to burn through it so I can repurpose the stunning yellow votive for plants or beauty brushes.

$175

Santa Maria Novella Four Seasons Autumn Incense

When the days and weeks blend into one, welcoming a new season feels insanely refreshing. Which is why I’m eager to transform my apartment into a cozy little outpost this fall. In addition to the blankets coming out of storage and the growing pile of books waiting to be read, I’ll have these wood-scented incense at a constant burn all season long.

$40

The Buffy Cloud in Full/Queen

OK, I’ll admit it—my college duvet has followed me into adulthood. While seemingly in good shape, I know it’s time to graduate to something that isn’t covered in a multitude of pen marks. The perfect excuse to indulge in one of Buffy’s perfectly fluffy (and sustainably made!) duvets, no?

$159

Checkmate Shag Rug

As per the many examples I’ve saved on Pinterest, I have a major soft spot for checkered floors. Seeing that my landlord probably won’t buy my plea to re-tile, I’ll happily settle for this fluffy rug instead.

MAX ID Ghost Tumbler

I absolutely love a pop of color—and with colder weather on its way, I have been trying to find fun ways to incorporate a little summer into my apartment. From wine cups to single-stem vases, this group of glassware also nails the mismatched look. Two birds, one stone.

$96

Bella McGoldrick Girl

If you need to give your walls some TLC and have no idea where to start, Tappan is the way. Gallery-quality art for every medium you could imagine. From sculpture to framed works, ranging big to small, it’s also a great way to support incredible young artists, and everything is shipped right to your door.

$375

Quiet Town The Sun Shower Phlox

If you have a New York apartment, the odds of your bathroom needing a face-lift are pretty good. I have always found that a good shower curtain (amongst many other trinkets) is the fastest way to a brighter and chicer space. I am obsessed with all of Quiet Town Curtains, but I'm personally ready to upgrade to this one.

Le Labo Santal 26 Classic Candle

We’re moving in December, so any immediate new home decor needs to be functional and necessary. Le Labo candles are the perfect way to bring a positive upgrade into our home right now. I’m in love with this one.

$75

Hermès Avalon III Throw Blanket

This continued time at home will likely double again when the weather changes, so I’ve been eyeing this classic throw. I can think of no better time to elevate our extended couch hours than the present.

$1,550

Le Creuset Set of 2 Stoneware Heart Ramekins

As the seasons change, I’ve been baking and indulging nonstop. Luckily, I just stumbled upon the cutest excuse to get back in the kitchen. And I can’t wait to serve heart-shaped single-serving desserts to myself on repeat.

$30

Loloi Rugs Masai Rug

In my opinion, the easiest way to make a space feel “complete” is to add a large rug. It takes away that empty feeling a space gets when there is too much bare space. While I may shy away from color sometimes, an exciting print like this one is perfect for my space!

$288

Urban Outfitters Huxley Mirror

I’m pretty sure it’s considered sacrilegious to work in fashion and not possess a full-length mirror—no OOTD pics for me. I’ve been on the hunt for a decent one for a while now, but they’re really expensive. I’ve been combing e-commerce sites like Urban Outfitters hoping something like this one would pop up!

$229

Brooklinen Luxe Core Sheet Set

There’s literally nothing more luxurious than having nice bedding. After all, you use it every single day, especially now, when we aren’t traveling as much. I love this crisp white set, but I have to be careful, i.e., no chocolate in bed.

$139

Kelsey Dobbs, Senior Marketing Manager

McGee & Co Duotone Marble Bookends

I swoon over everything McGee & Co; their aesthetic is the epitome of home goals. As my book collection has been growing over the last few months at home, I am looking for a stylish way to store and display my books, and these duotone marble bookends would look perfect in my neutral apartment.

$45

Ratio Eight

I have really stepped up my at-home coffee game lately, ordering beans from coffee shops across the country. I have also been eyeing this high-tech coffee maker that is also incredibly aesthetically pleasing.

$495

Saje Positively Poosh Diffuser Kit

I love diffusing my favorite essential oils at home, especially in the colder months. I am currently on the hunt for a diffuser that isn’t an eyesore, and this one checks all the boxes.

$100 $80

West Elm Curved Terrace Nightstand Set

Historically, my nightstands have always been a space where I stored spare notepads, bedside beauty products, and a slew of other miscellaneous items that I could simply throw into my nightstand and forget about. Basically, they were like my bedroom “junk drawers.” I love that these nightstands have no drawers, which adds a streamlined and minimal look to my bedroom to help me ease into sleep at night.

$199 - $398 $169 - $338

Vitruvi Stone Diffuser

I rely heavily on aromatherapy throughout my day to invigorate me in the morning, boost my productivity throughout the day, and lull me to sleep at night. This diffuser is my favorite because of its stone design—it looks more like a sculpture in my room rather than an onion-esque light party, like many other diffusers on the market.

$119

Ferm Living Ripple Carafe Glass

I’m a big believer that you’re more inclined to use something often when it looks good (which is great for someone like me, who can forget to drink water for hours on end). This water carafe minimizes the number of times I have to head to the kitchen to refill my water glass, and honestly, it looks great on my desk as I type away.
