Pride Month is upon us, and to commemorate the Stonewall Riots—six days of riots where hundreds of lesbian, bisexual, gay, transgender, and queer people fought against police oppression—it’s time to reflect on those that fought so bravely for the rights of LGBTQ+ persons, now more than ever. It’s also important to recognize that we have so much further to go, especially in light of current events.
According to a poll by the national LGBTQ advocacy group Human Rights Campaign and PSB Research, “17 percent of LGBTQ people had lost their jobs because of COVID-19, compared to 13 percent of the general population. LGBTQ people of color are disproportionately affected.” This means that along with donning your rainbow-clad gear, make sure you are paying attention to where your money is going, and do some research on trusted organizations you can help.
