Sheer Clothing Is Having a Moment—Here’s How to Style It

This material has a lot of potential.

sheer clothing trend
More times than not, the sheer pieces in our closets are reserved for nights on the town because, well, they’re legit see-through. And while we’ve styled our fair share of them with slinky lingerie and leather pants, we’re now beginning to realize that the fabric has so much more to offer. On the fall 2020 runways, designers were switching up the styling and colorways of the fabric, giving it a modern twist, and showing us how we can easily incorporate it into our daytime wardrobe. They also showed us a handful of new ways to work it into our evening wear. We’re talking anything from switching out your lace bra for a bandeau (as seen at Dion Lee) to layering black mesh over a contrasting color (c/o Eckhaus Latta). Below, our new favorite ways to style sheer for both day and night.

Daytime

The failsafe pairing for the day would be to layer a sheer shirt or dress over a tank or slip dress, but why limit yourself? Take notes from Natacha Ramsay-Levi at Chloé (left), and layer a sheer skirt over an oversized shirt (or a dress, if you’re looking for a little more coverage). Swap out your lacy bra for a less risqué bandeau (middle), or let a sheer top peek out from under your blazer. If you’re feeling extra adventurous, why not pop a sheer dress (right) over a pair of leggings?

Nighttime

Moving into the evening, swap out what you wear underneath your sheer piece. This is your chance to pull out your lingerie, and we suggest challenging yourself to pick something that isn’t black. This season, Brandon Maxwell (left) styled a sleek tonal underwear set underneath an elegantly draped dress, and the designers at Eckhaus Latta (middle) showed us the power of layering a brightly colored dress under black tulle. If it’s freezing out, try something like this Valentino look (right) that uses a sheer piece to cover the skin your crop top may have left exposed.
