What’s the Best Thing to Drink First Thing in the Morning?

When you wake up in the morning, you’re a precious blank slate. You’ve been fasting for a solid eight-plus hours, your body goes into major repair mode through detoxification and tissue growth, your bodily processes (like digestive, immune, and nervous system) are reset, your blood sugar and hormones are re-balanced, and the list goes on and on. You’re in pristine, ready-for-the-best-day-ever condition.

So what’s the first thing that touches your lips to keep this level of optimization going? Coffee? Apple cider vinegar? Detox shot? Supplements? Water? Morning affirmations? The number of choices are overwhelming, so we chatted with a few of our favorite nutrition specialists for tips on some of the best ways to ease your body into the day and set ’er up for optimal success. Here’s what they have to say.

Warm Lemon Water + Hearty Breakfast

“My go-to recommendation is to start your day by waking up with a glass of warm lemon water. The pectin from the lemon aids in digestion, helping to make lemon a phenomenal detoxifying food. Water with lemon also helps curb your appetite and boosts satiety. Flushing toxins and energizing your digestive tract sounds like a great way to start the day, right?

“After your beverage, a breakfast that incorporates protein, healthy fats, and fiber is a must-have for me. It can be as easy as scrambled eggs with spinach and onion, but I’m also a huge fan of smoothies. You can pack in tons of nutrients into an easily digestible breakfast.”

Clean, Mineral-rich Water + Your Unique Ritual

“Clean, mineral-rich water (like our beauty and detox waters) is essential first thing in the AM. It awakens all the systems and gently cleanses anything left over from the day before. Always water first.

“After water is where it gets tricky... And there’s no one-size-fits-all. For me, it’s organic coffee and fresh almond milk. Caffeine works for me, and I drink one cup and I’m done. Just like anything, you can’t overdo it. But more than anything, it might just be the ritual of it that is the most cathartic, healing part. My mom drank coffee every morning when I was a kid, and just the smell of it makes me feel good and like I’m home. So I’d say, after water, the most important thing to do is find your ritual, find the thing that makes you feel calm and grounded so you can be ready for your day.”

Gratitude + Warm Water w/ Lemon + Chlorophyll

“More importantly before drinking anything, as soon as your feet hit the floor in the morning, say one thing you’re extremely grateful for. Then, avoid grabbing your phone before drinking warm water with lemon and a shot of chlorophyll with your morning probiotic, if you have one. They’re all great for gut health first thing in the morning.”
