Fashion’s Favorite Matching Couple Send a Style Dispatch from Istanbul
To the Young Emperors, dressing alike is a symbol of their love.

Welcome to Style Diaries, a new series where we research the physical manifestations of our closet tours IRL. We're asking friends and tastemakers to show us what they're *actually* wearing during the week and to provide a little insight into their thoughts on the current state of fashion. This week, Young Emperors, fashion's favorite matching couple, sent a dispatch from their trip to Istanbul. Featuring a few of their go-to Turkish designers (and some fabulous poses), Nelson Tiberghien and Isabelle Chaput give a masterclass in traveling in style.
What role does fashion play in your life? How does it serve you?
“Fashion plays a major part in our lives. From the beginning, we were both individually passionate about fashion. We met in photography school in Paris while we were both studying to become fashion photographers and video makers. When we became a couple and a professional duo, it was only natural to us that fashion would also become an important part of our personal lives and a tool of self-art expression. That's when we started to wear matching outfits as a symbol of our love for one another. The way you dress can mean a lot, it's the paint on a canvas, and with its unlimited possibilities, you can tell a story, you can express opinions, make statements, describe who you are, express your mood, and it can make you feel different. So in our opinion, it has great power.”
Day 1:
“That day we wanted to visit cats that were hanging out near our hotel in Istanbul and take pictures with them, and then have lunch at a nice restaurant, so we wanted to dress up and look more glamorous to try to attract the cats (it worked).”

What does your style look like these days? Do you have a go-to outfit formula or do you prefer to switch it up when getting dressed?
“We are very eclectic in our choices of styles and looks; we are like chameleons and don't really attach ourselves to one specific style. We can wear flamboyant outfits or casual looks depending on the way we feel and the story we want to tell that day. It depends on our moods, but since the cold is coming, on a casual day we would prefer playing with layers and shapes, and these days we have been playing a lot with colors.”
Day 2:
“We wanted to feature an amazing Turkish designer for this picture since we were going to shoot in front of an iconic monument in Istanbul, the Hagia Sophia Grand Mosque, which bears so much history.”

What energy are you bringing to your ensembles this season? What are you looking forward to wearing?
“Winter is coming, and we are looking forward to wearing puffer jackets and coats! Puffer jackets are not just technical gear, but can also be creative statement pieces and exist in very artful forms, sometimes almost sculpture-like. Balaclavas and hoods are also cool pieces that can completely change an outfit while keeping you warm.”
Day 3:
"Since we shot the pictures in Istanbul, we wanted to feature some of the incredible Turkish designers we met while there. For this look, since we were visiting a neighborhood in Istanbul that was on a hill full of steep streets, we opted for a more casual look with a streetwear feel and comfortable sneakers."

In terms of beauty, what does your go-to hair and makeup routine look like and how does that change based on what you're wearing?
"We are usually quite plain in terms of hair and makeup, and unfortunately, we are not very skilled in that area. We like natural makeup on a day-to-day basis but will sometimes try to create a more editorial look when we are creating a strong story with our outfits."
