Although trends come, go, and evolve (skinny jeans, uggs, oversized sunglasses), it only takes one red carpet appearance to bring a trend back to life and onto our radars. Bubble skirts, a playful nod to 80s and 2000s style, were all the rage last year and now, thanks to Tyla, I’m immediately pulling mine out of my ‘to sell’ box.

The South African singer with silky smooth vocals is also known for her Y2K-inspired style, where she frequently revisits iconic pieces from the aughts like denim mini skirts, butterfly halter tops, and embellishments galore. On Variety’s Power of Young Hollywood red carpet at the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills this past Thursday, she stuck to what she knew and loved while adding a modern twist. The singer wore a periwinkle cropped button up top with only the two top buttons fastened, and a black bow adorned mini skirt, all from Palomo’s resort 2026 collection. Despite the set already doing some heavy lifting, she didn’t skimp on accessories: stacked silver rings, a dangly belly button ring, shimmery earrings, a chain anklet, and a feather statement-making headpiece. And, the best accessory of all, the award she received for being part of Variety’s Power of Young Hollywood class of 2025.

Palomo’s resort 2026 collection, fittingly called ‘Cocoon’, fully embraces the bubble silhouette, but not just in terms of skirts. Dresses, coats, and tops take on shape and texture, unafraid to take up space, pointing to trends to come, despite the bubble skirt boom of 2024.

2024 was the year of the bubble skirt, with Taylor Russell’s Venice Film Festival look forever engrained in my memory. At Miu Miu Spring/Summer 2024, ultra-mini bubble skirts were featured heavily throughout in suede and navy wool, solidifying the trend in the ziegeist, as Miuccia always does. Louis Vuitton’s Cruise 2025 collection featured a maximalist spin on the bubble skirt, proving that they work in different volumes and lengths. The trend snuck its way into the very beginning of 2025, with Ariana Grande’s bubble dress look on her Wicked press tour keeping the silhouette alive.

Now, Tyla’s perriwinkle red carpet look signifies that the trend isn’t going anywhere. Instead, it’s growing and evolving.
