Every few years, sunglasses trends shift into new (or old) territory. Back in 2020, the smaller the sunglasses, the better; then we moved into the speed dealer era, where things got very sporty and gorp-y very quickly. Now, we're making a return to the bug-eyed glamour of the late aughts with an influx of large oval sunglasses.
In Saint-Tropez over fourth of July weekend, Kendall Jenner was spotted in the water with her sister wearing a pair of oversized oval Thistles sunglasses—the same style that Emily Ratajkowski just wore on her "Too Much" press tour. Model Mona Tougaard is rarely seen without a dark black oversized pair, and Alexa Chung's Glastobury looks wren't complete without frames in a similar style.
There is something ultimately chic about a larger pair of frames, concealing everything from a night of little sleep, to a hangover, or maybe even a stink eye. Who knows! The best part is, no one will. When wearing big sunglasses, there's nothing you has to reveal about yourself that isn't evident by the size of the frames.
This season, "bug eyed" sunglasses are a little sportier in nature than, say, a classic Tom Ford Annabelle á la the Olsen twins. They wrap around the face more, sit higher up on the bridge of the nose, and have a more androgynous feel to them. If you're thinking about indulging in the It-girl eyewear trend of the season, our favorites, below.
