Moments before she hopped on a phone call with me, Samantha Burkhart was riding one of her horses around her 20-acre Montana property. This is apparently a regular occurrence for the L.A. transplant. In a move that bloomed from an extended trip to the state in the early days of the pandemic, the stylist—whose clients include Katy Perry and Billie Eilish—and her music manager husband, Jason, now call this tranquil oasis in Whitefish, Montana, home.

The five-bedroom, five-bathroom house was built in 2004 in a manner that left much to be desired. “It wasn't a blank canvas, it was a pretty ugly canvas,” Burkhart tells Coveteur. Over the course of a year, she and her husband added homey details—trim, wainscoting, paneling, tile, and more. They knocked down walls to create an open kitchen-dining-living area and added paint and wallpaper to round out the southwestern vibe.

Green is a consistent color found throughout the house, whether that’s the deep forest hue in the closet or the lighter, airier version in the kitchen—that would be the Benjamin Moore's color of the year: October Mist. “I know it's very on trend right now. But we simultaneously love all shades of green,” says Burkhart.

Burkhart emphasizes that the property itself is the best part. A long-time equestrian, she identified with the property's initial equine use—the former owner was a show jumper. The home sits on the Stillwater River and has a two-acre natural pond fed by Spencer Lake. An eight-stall horse barn houses the family’s horses. Both the barn and main home are coated in a creamy white hue—a staunch departure from their original bland brown.

That minimal farmhouse-like exterior contrasts with the eclectic finds within the home. The Burkhart's have collected a roster of intriguing pieces throughout their creative tenures. Items ranging from a painting by artist Faye Jones to a claw-foot tub in the master bathroom infuse the space with personality. “And that personality is Sam,” Jason assures me. Samantha’s creative brain applies to multiple verticals—she does a bit of interior design as well. “I'll take on clients here and there,” she says. "But I'm my own dream client.”
