4 Beauty Trends That Ruled New York Fashion Week

From minimalist nails to striking blue shadows.

As New York Fashion Week comes to a close, it’s time to reflect on the memorable beauty moments. The forecast for next fall saw all kinds of statements; some were striking in their effortlessness while others packed a colorful punch. Thankfully, we won’t need to wait until September to recreate these looks. Ahead you’ll find the four biggest beauty trends that emerged throughout the week, plus products to test out the look at home right now.

From the powder-blue pigment at Kim Shui to strokes of periwinkle eyeliner at Christian Siriano, bright blue was all over the runway this season. At Kim Shui, a veil of blue pigment was swept across lids, and at Christian Siriano, strokes of periwinkle hugged the lash line. At Maryam Nassir Zadeh, a wash of powder blue eyeshadow was brushed on select models.

When asked what drew him to the bold shade, Charlie Riddle, global beauty director for Stila Cosmetics and the man behind the makeup look for the Kim Shui show, says he chose the hue not only because of how well it paired with the clothes, but because “blue is one of those colors that looks good on every skin tone, from very pale to very deep.”

Offering a pared-back take on nails, we say barely there tones at Jason Wu, Brandon Maxwell, and Ulla Johnson. At Ulla Johnson, Tenoverten’s Nude Polish in Canal was swiped on to complete the minimalist look. Deborah Lippmann, who was behind the nail look at Jason Wu, chose a beige tone “ to complement the bright and bold hues on the runway.”

Meanwhile, at Brandon Maxwell, the neutral color was a chocolate brown. Lead nail artist Jin Soon Choi finished off the beauty look with an unreleased shade from her fall collection; you can still recreate the look with a similar shade from her line.

Many shows this season—including Proenza Schouler, Peter Do, and Collina Strada—chose to go with fresh-looking skin lightly touched with subtle coverage. “The makeup style is focused on the eyes,” says Aaron De Mey, a MAC makeup artist as well as the key artist behind the look at Peter Do. “The skin is very clean and matte with the eyebrows slightly toned down using a tiny amount of concealer.”

At Proenza, there was a skin-care0first approach. Esthetician Sylwia Gorzkowska used 111Skin’s Celestial Black Diamond Lifting and Firming Treatment Mask and Sub-Zero De-Puffing Eye Mask to plump and prep the skin for makeup application. There was a similar ethos at Collina Strada. “We wanted the models to look like themselves and their features to shine through the beauty look so coverage was kept sheer to medium with a glowing, fresh base,” says Allie Smith, the show’s lead makeup artist. Tula Skincare’s Protect + Glow SPF 30 and Rose Glow & Get It Eye Balm were both used to create a glowing canvas.

The sleek bun reigned supreme this season. At LaQuan Smith, lead hairstylist Lacy Redway “wanted the hair to complement the glamour that we know and love from LaQuan Smith. We kept it bold, sleek, and frozen in place—without a single strand out of place.” She used Tresemmé’s Tres Two Mega Control Gel to smooth back the hair before securing the look with Tres Two Freeze Hold Hair Spray. And at Brandon Maxwell, lead stylist Jawara used Dyson’s Supersonic Corrale Hair Straightener to give the sophisticated buns a shiny and mirror-like finish.
