The Weekender: Guide to Ithaafushi, Maldives
The Maldives offer more than overwater bungalows and white sand beaches – foodies are flocking to the islands for incredible dining.
The Maldives is famous for overwater bungalows dotted in a warm turquoise ocean and picture perfect beaches, but offer much more for in-the-know travellers. The islands are better known for attracting honeymooners more than gourmands, but that reputation is soon to evolve with drool-worthy dining and celebrity chefs opening up concepts that are catching the attention of foodies.
Ithaafushi, a collection of tiny islands in the South Malé Atoll, is at the forefront of the shift with restaurants like the newly opened Zuma location among its eleven dining options. The islands are home to the Waldorf Astoria Ithaafushi and, in addition to the fabulous dining, the resort offers all the other mouth-watering Maldives accompaniments – infinity pools perched over a crystal blue ocean, palapas shading pristine white sand, and schools of fish swimming along brightly colored coral reefs.

You might need to pinch yourself; the Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi is straight out of a dream. In addition to the iconic overwater villas, there are also serene beach villas and reef villas, all with private infinity pools and stunning views.
While it is on the larger side–119 villas spanning three islands–since it is so spread out, you still feel the sense of privacy and seclusion that you would if you were on your own private island. Which, in fact, you can do as well. The resort offers a separate 32,000 square meter private island for the ultimate in exclusivity.

Jump right into the warm, clear water from your villa and discover incredible marine gardens brimming with life. To mix things up, grab a standup paddleboard or kayak to venture further, or rent a jet ski to explore offshore sandbars. A few of these nearby sandbars have surprises on them for intrepid travelers, like a picturesque swing.

Amber is the sunset destination on Ithaafushi, perfectly positioned to see the sun sink down over the ocean. Linger as the sky begins to darken and sip on bubbles from an extensive Champagne list. A few feet away, garden-to-table restaurant Glow serves up nutrient-focused meals while surrounded by gardens and twinkle lights.
Find serenity at the spa

The Waldorf Astoria spa is the largest in the Maldives so you have extensive options for relaxing and indulging in treatments. Their approach is based on the elements of nature: earth, fire, water, or metal, and the spa grounds are a tribute to natural beauty. Book a sunset massage to soak in the serenity of the changing sky or check out one of the visiting wellness practitioners who bring skills in specializations like acupuncture and traditional herbal medicine.
