We consider ourselves experts in the following things: spending money, eating, and relaxing. We are not experts in anything remotely adult—like decorating for the holidays. Which is why we consulted Harley Viera-Newton, who, with her new line of party dresses and insanely festive Soho loft, is more or less the model citizen of all things decoration and entertainment.

With just a little over a week until the holidays *officially* kick off, we thought there was no better time to check in with her on her ultimate festive entertaining tips—including what to wear and listen to (did we mention she’s a DJ?).

Decor

“Decor-wise, embrace the holiday theme without going overboard. Its easy for things to quickly start looking a bit like the Griswolds home. I like using thin metal strings of twinkle lights (Restoration Hardware does the best ones) in unexpected places instead of regular plastic christmas lights. I always think it’s fun to leave the tree bare until the party and then have your friends each bring an ornament over and help decorate. Its a cosy activity and every ornament will feel special.”

Music

“The playlist is essential! Create a mix of all your favorite holiday tracks, mixing classics in with newer artists as well as covers. I suggest lots of Mariah. I made a particularly good one (if I may say so myself) with DJ Ross One...and its available to download now for free at harleyvieranewton.com!”

Drinks

“Have fun with holiday drinks. Everyone loves a good hot toddy, hot cider, egg nog, or hot chocolate, and theyre all pretty easy to make. I like to add holiday accents; a fun patterned straw, embroidered Christmas napkin, or shaped marshmallow (terrain does really cute snowflake ones).”

Dress

“Wear a GREAT holiday dress! I always go for something bright, patterned, or sparkly. I may have made a few... hint, hint. My personal picks are the red firework printed Morgan dress & silver metallic slip dress.”
