This Season’s Fringe Has Reached New Proportions

See how designers reinterpreted the classic trim.

Fringe in some form can often be found in the fashion arena at all times. The ribbon-like detail accentuates the sleeves of Western jackets, decorates the periphery of scarves, and adorns the hems of flashy mini skirts. This spring '22 fashion month, designers upped the ante. Beyond a simple frayed edge, this season's exaggerated fringe is not for the faint of heart.

At Christian Dior, stark white fringe rendered in a floral motif began at the bust and cascaded to the waist. At Proenza Schouler, Jack McCullough and Lazaro Hernandez relegated their plush fringe to tiers, so the entire skirt ballooned and splayed about like seaweed as the models strutted the runways. Gabriela Hearst showed something akin to netting at Chloé, where the lattice pattern came undone, making way for the loose strings to hang from the chest and almost reach the floor.

This larger-than-life form of fringe has been a favorite of Daniel Lee at Bottega Veneta for a few seasons now. His fall '20 collection featured iterations of the long strings. Some decorated the hems of coats and bags while others outfitted skirts. We would be remiss not to mention the daffodil-hued teddy coat Hailey Bieber wore to grab a coffee in New York last fall. The head turning outerwear switched to fringe with girth at the knee that just brushed the ground in a tantalizingly dangerous fashion—these are the streets of NYC, after all.

Fringe calls for movement. The string-like detail flits about the wearer as he or she walks (or hopefully dances) down the street or around the room. And the more exaggerated the tendrils, the greater their physical breadth. This burgeoning trend essentially reveals a tangible desire to be in motion that seems perfectly fitting for the current moment in time.
