Everything Our Editors Wore to NYFW

Three different takes on show-ready looks.

At its core, fashion week’s purpose is for editors, buyers, and stylists to observe the season’s newest collections. In its modern execution, the fashion show on the streets rivals that of the runways. For those of us who live, breathe, sleep, (consume, ingest, devour) fashion, the opportunity to flex our closets’ muscles in a like-minded environment is an enticing one. That bizarre blazer with the wacky structure and absurd embellishment finally has its rightful place among the metallic Tabi boots and Balenciaga-sized silhouettes. Below, our editors wax poetic about the sartorial vices they're indulging in this week, from floral Prada to leather Agolde.

I love September for so many reasons. The weather is crisp but still warm, the city is rapid-paced and more alive than ever, and NYFW descends upon us in a contagious event-filed energy unlike much else. Since my schedule is packed, I’m leaning on solid basics that can carry me through a day of many different meetings and events (these Agolde leather trousers are A+). Plus, I’ll always have a soft spot for layered gold jewelry and any piece that has a sense of humor—it’s the mix-and-match effort within these areas that allows me to play around and express myself.

There’s something comforting about standing outside a fashion show surrounded by individuals who are just as stimulated by a sharp knife pleat or a full ballerina skirt (still thinking about one from Interior) as you are. Their ensembles reflect said affinities—sartorially, nothing is too weird or wild. A few pieces naturally emerged in my own head as frontrunners for the week—a Qi-Pao-style Prada top I scored on The RealReal, a navy beaded dress (also Prada, also from The Realreal—sensing a theme here?), a Louis Vuitton jacket via What Goes Around Comes Around, and a sailor-style Japanese uniform top I picked up in Paris.

These are pieces that do the work for you; they need little else by way of styling. I added in very simple separates—cream trousers, black shorts, and my everyday shoulder bag. When it comes to footwear, I have no desire to clomp around the street in anything but flats—very chic ones, that is. I swear by my G.H. Bass Weejuns which I’ve been styling with ankle socks this season. Despite my desire to experiment with a statement piece, I never want to feel silly. I felt like myself in each ensemble—as I proudly display my unabashed pension for mixing navy and black.

When it comes to my wardrobe choices, fashion week or not, I’m drawn to sophisticated staples, saturated shades, and form-fitting silhouettes. My favorite looks from the past week? A bubblegum pink ruffled midi dress paired with black ankle boots, a chocolate midi-dress that elegantly hugs the body, and bold patterned knit pants with intentional pops of color. Though at first glance, these outfits appear to have nothing in common, take a closer look and you’ll realize that they’re all timeless pieces with thoughtful details and a contemporary twist.
