The Chunky Bangle Boom Suggests That Minimalism Is So Out
Shop our picks to start growing your stack.

One of the biggest trends of the summer suggests that minimalism is out and maximalism is in. Well, in terms of jewelry, at least. We are no strangers to a maximalist jewelry wave: we all remember how colorful chunky plastic and resin rings, popularized by brands like La Manso and Blobb, reconnected us to our childhood selves throughout 2021 and 2022. Jewelry trends fluctuate, as all trends do: one day chunky and bold is the go-to and the next, dainty and demure takes over. I’m happy to say that chunky silhouettes are once again having their moment and this time, bracelets—bangles in particular—in all the shapes, colors, and materials you can imagine, are taking over our feeds.
Chunky bangles like the ones we are seeing remerge into the zeitgeist trace back to the 20th century, the Art Deco period to be specific. Throughout the ‘20s, ‘30s, and ‘40s, Bakelite (the first fully synthetic plastic) jewelry (mostly bangles) was an affordable way to dress up and add color to an outfit. Even Coco Chanel tapped the material for jewelry, so you know that means it was popular.
Although Bakelite has been replaced with newer, more durable materials (resin, for example), the trend has resurfaced and I would argue for similar reasons as why it was created in the first place: it’s an easy way to transform clothes into an outfit and to really complete a look. Now, the trend is being embraced wholeheartedly and without restraint: It-girls like Zara Larsson and Elsa Hosk aren’t just wearing a single chunky bangle, they’re wearing stacks.
With luxury brands such as YSL and Armani taking on the trend as displayed on their Spring/Summer 2025 runways, the option to tap into the past and scour the internet and thrift stores for vintage chunky bangles, and material options galore, we encourage everyone to start building their stack.
