9 Family Things to Do in Boston That Don’t Feel Like a History Lesson
Alexandra Barretto

When it comes to debating the best city in the United States, I am particularly biased in favor of Boston. It’s not just because my husband grew up in Boston or that my daughter attended Northeastern University, there's something magical about this city that has captured my heart. Boston offers an unparalleled experience for a girl's trip, a romantic getaway, or, in my case, a special bonding journey with my daughter.

Whether you want to step back in time to the Boston of old or explore the modern features of New Boston, you can find it all just by exploring on foot. Boston seamlessly weaves together its rich European heritage and historical elegance with its ever-evolving modernity. The city's old-world appeal can be found in neighborhoods like Beacon Hill and the North End, where cobblestone streets, beautiful architecture, and a sense of timelessness prevail. Meanwhile, the bustling Seaport District represents the new face of Boston, with its contemporary skyline, waterfront attractions, and vibrant culinary scene. Seamlessly coexisting, these contrasting facets of Boston offer a unique and captivating experience unlike any other metropolitan city.

Where to Stay

The Seaport Hotel

Situated in the vibrant Seaport District, the Seaport Hotel embodies the perfect blend of an authentic European getaway and a historic waterfront location, offering breathtaking views of both the Boston Harbor and the city skyline. This luxurious hotel not only provides a serene retreat but also places you within walking distance of a plethora of shops, bars, restaurants, and museums. Step inside, and you'll be greeted by residentially-inspired decor that instantly makes you feel at home in this dynamic neighborhood. Only 20-30 minutes from Logan Airport, the Seaport Hotel becomes an ideal haven for travelers seeking both comfort and easy access to the best that Boston has to offer.

What to Do

Museum of Fine Arts

After lunch, we ubered over to the Museum of Fine Arts, which both Lexi and I have visited many times during her four years at Northeastern as it’s located very close to campus. For old time's sake we popped into the gallery to see the Great Wave: Hokusai Exhibit. The exhibit was amazing, and unfortunately has since ended, but they always have incredible visiting exhibitions alongside the cultural treasure trove that is their permanent gallery. With a vast array of artistic masterpieces from different eras and cultures, it's the perfect place to lose an afternoon in Boston. Together, we marveled at exquisite paintings by renowned artists, gazed in awe at ancient sculptures, and admired delicate artifacts from distant civilizations.

The Harvard Art Museum

Discover a world of artistic wonders at the Harvard Art Museum, a cultural gem nestled within the prestigious Harvard University in Cambridge. With its extensive collection spanning diverse periods and genres, this museum offers a captivating journey through art history. Immerse yourself in masterpieces from renowned artists such as Monet, Manet, Van Gogh, Gaugin, and Picasso, as well as ancient and cultural artifacts from around the globe. I even found a representation of my own heritage, Hispano-Philippine, in one of the myriad galleries. All in all, whether you are an art enthusiast or simply seeking creative inspiration, visiting the Harvard Art Museums promises an unforgettable exploration of human creativity and expression.

Spending an afternoon popping in and out of stores at The Current in the Seaport District is a dynamic experience thanks to its ever-evolving lineup of brands.
