A few times a year, a trend resurfaces that leaves the masses divided. One party is more than happy to take a trip down memory lane and embrace a blast from the past and, in this case, others would rather leave the 1980s—and the permed hair and neon everything that came along with it—behind them. But, whether you like it or not, balloon pants are back—and, regardless of which camp you fall into, we're making a case for them.
The balloon pant is characterized by a rounded and roomy silhouette in the hip and thigh areas and a tapered ankle. Essentially, the pants look inflated like, you guessed it, a balloon. They offer shape, dimension, and intrigue to any and all looks and, if 2026 runways taught us anything about the style, it's that they are far more versatile than any of us thought—which, in my opinion, earns them a spot in modern fashion.
Altuzarra SS26 // Launchmetrics
Ashlyn SS26 // Launchmetrics Both Altuzarra and Ashlyn's Spring/Summer 2026 collections made a case for the dressed up balloon pant. At Altuzarra, we spotted balloon pants paired with black boots, a belted leather jacket, and a pillbox hat for a look that felt city girl chic. At Ashlyn, balloon pants were a part of matching sets. On both runways, a classic trouser would've worked, but simply wouldn't have been as intriguing.
Chloé FW26 // Launchmetrics
Moschino FW26 // LaunchmetricsOn Chemena Kamali's Chloé Fall/Winter 2026 runway, the designer featured balloon pants with a bohemian flair. Balloon pants of varying colors, some solid and some complete with floral details, were all complete with distinct ruffles. On Moschino's Fall/Winter 2026 runway, balloon pants were paired with contrasting aesthetics: with a sweater, button up top, and necktie for a preppy element, but also with hiking-inspired boots to lean into the technical aesthetic that we all know and love.
Dior FW26 // Launchmetrics
Michael Kors SS26 // LaunchmetricsWhile balloon pants serve as a statement in their own right, Jonathan Anderson at Dior for Fall/Winter 2026 and Michael Kors' Spring/Summer 2026 collection took it one step further with embellishments galore. The result? Balloon pants worthy of a night out, suited for the fanciest of dinners, and proving that the silhouette transcends aesthetic and occasion.
