If you reside in a place where a seasonal change ensures a major shift in temperature, you know that harsh weather can severely limit your fashion choices. Now that winter is in full swing, outerwear reigns supreme and exposed ankles are, well, not the smartest choice. And when it comes to your bountiful range of footwear, boots are often your best option if you prioritize warmth. Despite the way it sounds, this restriction doesn’t have to be limiting. In fact, the reverse is often true.

As is the case with most fashion items, there are simply so many boot options available on the market today—tall, mid-calf, ankle, heeled, flat, Chelsea, lace-up, you name it. To help narrow the field, we’ve consulted a few of our favorite footwear designers to reveal the season’s biggest trends and the particular styles they are excited about, whether that be a lug-sole Chelsea boot or a mid-heel knee-high version. On a positive note, these modern styles may just have the ability to make the frigid weather a little less daunting.
