5 ’80s Trends That Are *Totally* Reemerging

Think bomber jackets, power suits, and shoulder pads.

Fashion Week
80s trends
The ’80s were a decade that wasn’t afraid to play with fashion. Designers like Sonia Rykiel, Gloria Vanderbilt, and Stephen Sprouse experimented with new, oversized proportions and loud prints, and although they sometimes get a bad rap, the silhouettes were iconic. It was the first time workout wear was considered an actual fashion statement (yes, we’re talking spandex and biketards). The colors were bright, the patterns were bold, and the shoulders were BIG.

We were delighted to see remnants of the ’80s on the runways during fashion month, with everyone from Stuart Vevers at Coach to Saint Laurent’s Anthony Vaccarello referencing the decade. See and shop five ’80s styles that are about to be everywhere…again.

Exaggerated Shoulders

Nothing says ’80s like a shoulder pad, and they can be worn in just about anything—dresses, blouses, jackets, you name it. Brands ranging from Acne Studios to Isabel Marant to CHANEL are experimenting with these funky proportions.

The Party Dress

With a nod to your mom’s ’80s prom dress, these renditions are still invoking the bright colors, shiny fabric, and draping, but with a slightly updated silhouette. They can be worn in a very ’80s way with contrasting opaque tights, or as they were styled in the Alberta Ferretti show, with a tonal shoe.

Power Suits

Think Melanie Griffith in Working Girl meets 2020. The blazers ALWAYS have a shoulder pad with a super-boxy fit. Both pants and a skirt are acceptable on the bottom. The emphasis here is often on a nipped-in waist.

Leggings

This is a trend we can get on board with, as it’s actually comfortable. Make sure whatever you wear on top is oversized to balance out their skintight silhouette. If you’re daring, pair them with a high heel.

Molly Ringwald in just about any John Hughes film is the vibe designers are going for here. We’re seeing boxy cuts and lots and lots of layering—socks sticking out of shoes, turtlenecks under sweaters, and a jacket or blazer over everything.
