The Two Drugstore Brands Celebrity Makeup Artist Hrush Achemyan Swears By
Tristan Kallas

One scroll through Hrush Achemyan’s Instagram feed, and it’s pretty easy to fall down that rabbit hole. When the celebrity makeup artist isn’t sharing photos of her well-known clients—such as Khloé Kardashian and Kylie Jenner—she’s posting about the beauty products she’s using and loving, or showing off her work via a flawless selfie. It’s no wonder she’s gathered over two million followers; even if you’re not a makeup pro, you can’t help but want to know more.

So how did Achemyan get to this level? What are the drugstore steals she swears by? And what does she say to people who think a more natural look is best? Her answers, ahead, are definitely worth reading.

Were you always into makeup?

“Art has always played a big role in my life. I used to oil-paint religiously. It was my escape, and I slowly transitioned that into painting on a dimensional surface. That is how my love affair with makeup began. [Then] social media was a prominent tool in my journey to becoming a celebrity makeup artist. Kim Kardashian discovered me through Instagram.”

Any products you’ve been loving as of late?

“Believe it or not, Maybelline’s Master Chrome Highlighter. It’s a steal.”

Do you ever go makeup-free?

“All of the time! When I am working, I am usually glam-free. It is good to let your skin breathe.”

What are some products you use to ensure clear skin?

“I am obsessed with Caudalie. I have crazy-sensitive skin, and their products are gentle on my skin. Also, 111SKIN Gold masks give me a golden glow. Aside from products, I am addicted to HydraFacials. I get one once a month by my skin guru, Pawnta.”

Any other drugstore makeup recommendations?

“L’Oréal and Maybelline have the best products. They are comparable to high-end department-store goodies.”

What’s the secret to your bold brows?

“For me, the major key is symmetry. I always begin with shaping and enhancing brows. I believe in creating a lot of texture when drawing in the frames to your face. I love Make Up For Ever brow liner. You can emulate hair with this baby. For shading, I use Brow Wiz by Anastasia Beverly Hills.”

Same Q, but for eyelashes!

“You always want natural-looking, fluffy lashes. Clumpy lashes make your eyes look harsh. I love lash primers to build a thick foundation. Currently, I’m into Lancôme Cils Booster XL. I follow with two coats of L’Oréal Lash Paradise mascara.”

Colorful eyeshadow and eyeliner is having a moment. Any tips for embracing that trend on a daily basis?

“For the everyday woman, I would say use the bold liners in your water line. This will enhance your eye color as a bonus. For example, I love to use a deep purple. A dark green is so pretty and trendy.”

What do you have to say to people who believe less is more and kind of bash lots of makeup?

“Whatever floats your boat, booboo! Makeup is empowering and gives confidence to women who wear it. Why would you ever knock that?”

With such a big following, do you ever get haters who comment on your photos? How do you ignore them and remain confident?

“I do all of the time, but it has turned into white noise. I guess you really have to be confident in who you are, what your beliefs are, and what you stand for. You also have to understand that not everyone is going to agree with you, and that is OK. Some people are more verbal than others, but it does not faze me. I am being true to who I am and my brand. At the same time, you receive so much love, and the masses can relate to your struggle, work, and passions. That’s a beautiful thing.”

Do you have any tips for how someone can get to your level?

“Be consistent, and pour your heart into whatever it is you wish to excel in. Most importantly, be bold and be different.”
