Welcome to Style Diaries, a series where we research the physical manifestations of our closet tours IRL. We're asking friends and tastemakers to show us what they're *actually* wearing during the week and to provide a little insight into their thoughts on the current state of fashion. This week, we follow Zooey Deschanel as she promotes her film Dreamin' Wild at the Venice Film Festival. She's collaborated with stylist Ib Abdel Nasser to curate a roster of ensembles true to her personal style which she describes as classic, but always with a touch of whimsy.

Look 1: The Miu Miu Party

Clothes and Accessories: Miu Miu

"The black suit is all Miu Miu. I love a classic suit. It was very, very nicely tailored. The skirt was short and A-line with a kind of '60s feel to it. Then I think the bow in the hair made the outfit for me. I [like the '60s era of fashion] because of the tailoring."

Look 2: The Press Day

Dress: Dolce & Gabbana

"This is from the Dolce [& Gabbana] archive. It's 2012 Alta Moda and I wore that for my press day. Have you ever seen the inside of a couture dress? It's just amazing. This dress has padding on the hips, and little grosgrain ribbon on the inside so it makes sure everything fastens really tightly. The inside of the dress alone is just beautiful. They took a lot of things out of the archive for me to try on, and I saw this and I just said, 'That is so me.'"

Look 3: The Cast Dinner

Dress: Self Portrait

"I love that dress. It's classic. It is black, but it lays so you can see the detail. It's just a nice little spin on a classic little black dress."

Look 4: Off-Duty

Top: Hai; Skirt: Rhode; Shoes: Larroudé

"I really like [the brand Hai's] stuff. They had a lot of really cute separates and that made up a lot of what I was just wearing day to day in Venice."

Look 5: Fittings

Coat: Kate Spade New York

"I didn't wear that—it was too hot. But we did take a picture in it and I did like the idea of it—were it cold.”

Notes on Style:

How would you describe your sense of style?

“I obviously go by my taste, but I also try to wear what looks good on me. I like stuff that's well tailored. Tailoring's an important thing for me. And then picking the right color palette and everything. But other than that, I like classic but whimsical pieces.”

What are some elements of clothing that you gravitate towards?

“I do love color. I'll wear black and white in my life, but it doesn't photograph as well—I think. I prefer color. You can see the details of the garment better in photographs when it has color. Then, I like changing something up with a nice detail. I love a nice detail.”

What does the process look like when you are conceptualizing outfits for these sorts of events with your stylist Ib Abdel Nasser?

“He knows my style really well, which is great. [For the Dolce dress], we started talking about that maybe three weeks before. We started looking at inspiration, collaborating with the Dolce team and trying to figure out what we wanted things to look like. It starts off with inspiration photos, but that's just a jumping off point because it ended up being something totally unique, which was wonderful.”

Is it ever tough when you're putting together these looks to have to think so much about how things photograph?

"I usually just take photographs of them to see what they look like on camera. Sometimes I'll try something on and it'll look amazing in person and then it doesn't photograph very well. And then sometimes something looks okay in person and then I see it on camera and it just pops. It's a whole other [parameter]. So in a fitting, we always take lots of pictures so we can see really what things look like."

For one of the looks, you pulled from the Dolce & Gabbana archive. Do you enjoy the ability to venture outside the current season?

"I do. First of all, I'm more likely to find stuff that's really my style. Because one season, there might be 20 things that I love, and then maybe another season it might not be as [me]. So it gives me a lot of freedom. And it's also environmentally conscious, which I like, too."
