Whether we are ready for it or not, Fall is about to pass us by all too quickly, and Winter will be upon us before we know it. For those who live in New York, you know that there is nothing worse than being ill-prepared when the cold front comes, and thankfully, the Fall/Winter 2026 runways have offered up plenty of winter coat inspiration for the upcoming season.

Winter outerwear is different from Fall outerwear because, unlike Fall, where a jacket is can be a statement piece, winter coats have to do the heavier lifting. Therefore, we swap out materials to ensure we are truly wrapping up warm. Wool suiting is switched for boiled wool coats, funnel neck anoraks become funnel neck jackets with hefty lining, and so on. This season, we saw an emphasis on cropped (faux) fur coats, check print, and weather-proof essentials come down the Fall/Winter 2026 runways. So below, find the winter outerwear trends that mean business this season.

Cropped Fur

Khaite FW26 // Spotlight Launchmetrics
Valentino FW26 // Spotlight Launchmetrics

Faux fur was trending last winter in a way we haven't seen for years, and this winter is expected to be no different. The only change? We're predicting that cropped fur—instead of long coats—will be the favored silhouette this year, as seen at Valentino, Khaite, Bottega Veneta, Saint Laurent, and more throughout Fall/Winter 2026.

Funnel Necks

Isabel Marant FW26 // Spotlight Launchmetrics
Balenciaga FW26 // Spotlight Launchmetrics

Another winter silhouette that is not new is the funnel neck. Arguably one of the biggest outerwear trends we've seen in a number of years, funnel neck jackets and coats have taken over the trend cycle for the past year, and there is no sign of things slowing down for the collar shape that is now a staple in many of our wardrobes. For Fall/Winter 2026, funnel-neck jackets and coats showed up shearling-lined at Isabel Marant, sleek and simple at Balenciaga, undone at Ferragamo, and buttoned right up at Burberry.

Checked Coats

Chloe FW26 // Spotlight Launchmetrics
Burberry FW26 // Spotlight Launchmetrics

Since Chemena Kamali's Chloé Fall/Winter 2026 show earlier this year, we knew that come the colder months, check print was going to be at the forefront of the trend cycle this season, and we were right! While the check print coat references were everywhere on the runway, we've begun to witness the print in real life, too, in professor-style jackets and trench coats, which will no doubt be swapped for heavier check print options as the temperature drops.

Fur Collars

Gabriela Hearst FW26 // Spotlight Launchmetrics
Ferragamo FW26 // Spotlight Launchmetrics

For those who aren't ready to go all out on the faux fur, fur collars are the perfect middle ground for winter weather. Keep your neck protected while mixing textures to create a visually interesting outfit like Gabriela Hearst did at her FW26 show, or lean into shearling-lined jackets whose collars can be flipped inside out to reveal the warm lining and get the best of both worlds.

All Terrain

Miu Miu FW26 // Spotlight Launchmetrics
Prada FW26 // Spotlight Launchmetrics

When the weather is too much to bear, sometimes nothing trumps function, and the Fall/Winter 2026 runways recognized as much this season, sending waterproof jackets, puffer coats, and heavy quilted coats down the runway, so we can still be stylish while braving a snowstorm.
