Welcome to Style Diaries, a series where we research the physical manifestations of our closet tours IRL. We're asking friends and tastemakers to show us what they're *actually* wearing during the week and to provide a little insight into their thoughts on the current state of fashion. This week, we follow Noelle Sciacca, The RealReal’s fashion lead through a week of work, events, brunches, and more. Unsurprisingly, almost everything she wears is vintage or pre-owned, which she then styles in a manner she dubs “classic with a twist.”

Look 1: On the Job

Dress: Dodo Bar Or; Boots: Vintage;

“This is [what I wear] when I have a presentation and I want to feel ultra-professional. It's kind of like a power suit, because it's actually a dress with a belt. The first time I wore it, my sister said that I looked like Carmen Sandiego. It was the best compliment. I really feel like I'm in a power mode at work. These are vintage boots. I think everyone should have a pair of tall boots, especially as they're transitioning between seasons. They’re the perfect solution for that awkward phase between summer and fall when you don’t want to wear tights with a skirt or a dress. I honestly wear them all the time.”

Look 2: A Work Event—Or A Morning Coffee Run

Top Vintage; Pants: John Galliano; Shoes: Manolo Blahnik; Bag: Proenza Schouler;

“These are actually John Galliano Spring/Summer 2000 collection. I bought them for a holiday event at work. I wanted something that felt festive, but in an unexpected way—not traditional sequins. Now, I honestly find myself wearing them to the coffee shop all the time. I get a lot of compliments on them, but it's those compliments where you don’t know if someone actually likes them, like, 'Wow. Look at your pants.’”

Look 3: Off Duty

Jeans: Simon Miller; Top: Rosie Assoulin; Shoes: Studio Pollini; Bag: Bottega Veneta;

“Those are Simon Miller jeans I bought a while ago. They're my go-to pair. Interestingly enough, they were more low-slung than I initially thought but the tides turned in that direction so it was perfect. Their silhouette is great. Then, the top is Rosie Assoulin. I don't know if it's intended to be a vest, but I've worn it over a silk top as a vest. Then in the summer, I can just wear it sleeveless. The shoes are these Studio Pollini wedges that my neighbor, who's maybe five years older than me, wore in high school in the 2000s. She was cleaning out her closet, and I was like, ‘Wait, wait, wait. I need those.’ The green is everything. The fact that they're wedges—I was just very into them.

“I actually bought that [Bottega Veneta bag] as soon as Daniel Lee came on. The [intrecciato weave] became a trend again, and I was like, ‘Wait a minute. We have such amazing product on The RealReal.’ It's like old Bottega. I originally bought it just to have a pouch for my work tote, but then started taking it when I'd go out.”

Look 4: Brunch Down the Shore

Top: Missoni; Skirt: Helmut Lang; Bag: Miu Miu; Shoes: Nanette Lepore;

Photos: Courtesy of Noelle Sciacca

“Honestly, if I look through my obsessions on The RealReal, probably 50% of them are Missoni right now. I know primary market-wise, Missoni's not necessarily making a major comeback, but something is coming and I have all the product for when it does—it's already in my closet. So, that's a Missoni top, a Helmut Lang leather mini skirt. Mini skirts are coming back, but the last time I really wore miniskirts, it was all about denim. I thought, ‘let me just take it up a level and go for a leather one.’ I was really happy with that choice.

“I don't have a uniform, but I do have a sort of a style routine or phase. I'll get into outfits and just repeat them over and over again. I've worn this skirt over and over and over again. I went down to the shore and had brunch with some friends, but I've worn this probably every time I've gone to brunch this summer. I like it, so I'm going to enjoy it. Then the Miu Miu bag I also got from The RealReal. When I saw it, I knew it was the perfect combination of everything I want in a bag—the crescent shape, the metallic texture.

“The shoes are Nanette Lepore. Back to my early fashion editor days, that show was part of my beat. I used to cover swim week in Miami when I was at Lucky. We were having lunch with Nanette, because she was hosting a handful of editors and she had gifted us these sandals. To be honest, they were in my closet and I forgot about them. Recently, I wanted flatforms and realized, ‘Wait, I have flatforms.’ Every now and then, you're happy you kept something.”

Look 5: The Wedding Guest

Dress and Shoes: Vintage Celine; Shoes: Miu Miu;

Photos: Courtesy of Noella Sciacca

“This is a vintage Celine dress. I think it’s Michael [Kors era]. It was the height of lockdown and my coworker chatted me, ‘Hey, you have to have this. It's so you.’ I bought it. Especially when you're shopping secondhand and vintage, if you fall in love with something, don't wait for an occasion to wear it. Buy it—and I'm so happy I did, because there were so many opportunities to wear it this season. You want something that feels different, not everyone's going to have, but still feels like you, and you're going to feel comfortable moving in. This was the perfect dress. This bag kind of was that perfect neutral that I could wear everyday, but also dress up. This is a head-to-toe ode to old Celine here.

“I wore a charm bracelet. All the jewelry I wear is very minimal. I usually wear the same stuff every day, but it's all unbranded. This bracelet, specifically, is my mom's. She had it when she was a little girl. Her aunt would give her different charms for different occasions. I borrowed that from her a while back, as well.”

Notes on Style:

I know it's really, really hard to kind of boil down a sense of style into a few words, but could describe what you gravitate towards when you are adding things to your own collection?

“I've thought about this one—and it's tricky—but what I came up with is classic with a twist. Either it's a classic silhouette, like a simple trouser or simple top silhouette, but there's something interesting or unexpected in its print or color. Or, if it is a silhouette that feels more sculptural or architectural, then I usually end up going with a more neutral color palette. I always like to have some sort of unexpected element, but ultimately, a classic approach.”

Complementary to that, tell us a little bit about your lifestyle and what you actually need to get dressed for on a regular basis.

“We've been working remotely for a while now on the East Coast branch of TRR, but we do have occasions where we have work events. That definitely makes me want to dress up and [skew] even more professional than I was before we left the office. I have a newfound desire to put on a heel, to put on something that feels a little bit more structured than I would have before. There's definitely pieces in my wardrobe that were retired that I've brought back. But then I’ve also been dressing up for the ‘everyday.’ I wore giraffe pants to get coffee before work one day, and I was like, ‘This is fun.’ Everyone was in sweats, but I'm like, ‘You know what? I want to get dressed to go get matcha.’

“I found myself needing more event-dressing options this summer than I have in the past. I think, ultimately, I have retired buying anything that feels more casual or like loungewear for things that make me feel excited to dress up and to push myself in my personal style. But as my style evolves with me, there's still [an element] that's true to me, so it's interesting to see that [process].”

As someone who eats, sleeps, breathes fashion in more of a career sense, I'm sure your job also involves cataloging trends, keeping tabs on what is popular, and how that cycle moves. How do you delineate between that and your personal style? Do you find yourself mimicking those trends or do you like to stay in a lane that evolves at a slower pace?

“It definitely still plays into my style. It is so much part of my job, but I think why it's part of my job is because it does excite me, like the recent Coperni show for Fall ‘22. I saw it and my heart skipped a beat. It's not Couture or anything, but I'm immediately like, ‘I want those mini skirts and those knee-high socks.’ There's elements like that which, yes, I want to incorporate, but at this point in my life, I also know what silhouettes compliment my body and what makes me feel the most confident. It's taking those trends and interpreting them with what works best for me.”

Do you ever like to road test a trend that you are working with in a work setting?

“I definitely like to do that, especially if I'm on set and have the opportunity to test it out. When our office was above the TRR SoHo store, I would ask the allocators that send the product to the store to send certain things there. I could try it before someone bought it. Sometimes, there are things I get eager about, then give them a spin and I'm like, ‘I actually don't feel that great in this. It is for somebody else but not me.’"

Do you wear all vintage or pre-owned or do you have a mix of current pieces in?

“It is basically all The RealReal. I guess it's one of the great perks, but also casualties, of the job—seeing the product all day, everyday. My coworkers and I are such bad influences on one another. We'll chat each other links. By nature of just having my hands in the inventory all day, I kind of forget how to shop the primary market. I don't really even know what to look for, because my way is just organic. Something pops up and I'm like, ‘I need that,’ or I'll see something, obsess, and save it.”

Then the last piece of the puzzle, what's your everyday hair and makeup look?

“Pretty easy. When I was going to the office every day I would blow my hair out, straighten it, then curl it. Now, I’ve decided to just embrace my natural texture, which I found was actually a little bit wavy—not stick straight when you don't straighten it. It's kind of amazing to see that. I use Calia shampoo and conditioner and then Crown Affair Hair Oil. I just put a little bit in the tips of my hair to tame frizz.

“Then for skincare/makeup, I've been using the La Roche-Posay eye cream. Then Merit makeup. I've been on that kick, just testing everything out. I guess if I'm going out, I'll put some eyeshadow and mascara on for an event, but otherwise, pretty simple.”
