I appreciate Kaia Gerber for her tried and true outfit formulas and staples: Levi 501 jeans, perfectly tailored trousers, baby tees (sometimes featuring a delightful literary pun), oversized blazers, slim sneakers, and ballet flats to name a few recurring characters. And I appreciate that even more when occasionally juxtaposed by a bold, statement-making red carpet look—a naked dress, for example.

For the New York City premiere of her new series The Shards, Gerber didn't just wear any plain old naked dress—she wore an intricately embellished naked dress by Alessandro Michele for Valentino that shimmered and glistened when the light hit just right. Gerber and stylist Emma Jade Morrison, knowing that the dress was enough of a main character, accessorized with minimal, understated jewelry: a single ring and diamond stud earrings.

Her look, with a vintage, art deco edge, felt entirely appropriate considering the series she is promoting. Adapted from Bret Easton Ellis's psychological horror novel, The Shards takes place in a 1981 Los Angeles, with an elite prep school as the main setting. Throughout the '80s, art deco fashion was essentially a '20s revival: heavy embellishments, geometric prints and shapes, and that hard to put into words flair associated with the jazz age.

Kaia Gerber is no stranger to the naked dress. The sheer black lace Givenchy mini dress with the dramatic, ballet-inspired skirt that she wore to this year's Pre-Oscars Vanity Fair party still, over five months later, lives rent free in my mind. This time around, though, the Valentino naked-dress had her channeling '90s supermodel more than ever—and, all while looking more identical to her mom than ever.
