The Secrets to Success (In FinTech)
Trunk Archive

We've known finance, specifically Fintech, to be a male-dominated industry filled with Patagonia vest-sporting finance bros at the helm. But as we step into 2024, Oxygen is reshaping the industry with their full commitment to creating an inclusive environment. With the rise of FinTech, particularly with Millennial and Gen Z users, Oxygen understands that supporting their diverse audience with different financial needs starts from within. Building a diverse staff generates multiple avenues of success through innovation and creativity. We chatted with Oxygen's VP of Human Resources, Andi Seymour, to learn what it takes to thrive in Fintech, especially as an underrepresented minority.

What’s your role and title?

Andi Seymour (VP of Human Resources): My team and I are responsible for building a world-class staff and culture that enables everyone to be their best selves. This helps the company accomplish its mission and drive impact in individuals by breathing life into their financial future.

What’s it like to identify as a female in a historically male-dominated industry?

AS: As a female immigrant in the FinTech industry, I embrace the opportunity to foster a more inclusive environment. While it’s true that the industry has historically been male-dominated, I see this as a chance to introduce new ideas and make a meaningful impact. It’s similar to the concept of being a start-up and disrupting an industry, like how Airbnb disrupted the hospitality industry. I find myself not just contributing to what we are building, but also actively participating in reshaping the industry’s culture. It’s a role that involves constant learning, resilience, and the chance to inspire future generations of women to pursue careers in technology and finance. The experience is empowering, and it emphasizes the importance of diverse perspectives in driving innovation and growth within the industry.

In FinTech, women and minorities are noticeably underrepresented. I am of the opinion that Gen Z and Millennials represent an untapped market for FinTech, given their general aversion to traditional banking and financial institutions.

We’ve heard that Oxygen prioritizes DEI. How does that set the organization apart from the rest in the tech world?

AS: Oxygen's commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion truly sets us apart in the tech world. We recognize that diverse teams are not just a moral imperative but a business advantage, leading to innovative solutions and a broader understanding of customers' needs. Take our leadership team, for example, most of them are first-generation immigrants. We understand that diversity goes beyond just numbers; it's about creating an inclusive culture where everyone feels valued and heard. Our commitment is to create an inclusive environment where everyone, including working parents and individuals from all backgrounds, is represented and valued.

What are the “secrets to success” in FinTech?

AS: The 'secrets to success' in FinTech, as I've learned as an immigrant, involve not just technological savvy, but also a profound understanding of diverse user behaviors and addressing real-world financial needs that often vary by community. In an industry evolving at a rapid pace, adaptability and embracing change are more than just buzzwords; they are necessities. We see success as deeply intertwined with recognizing and serving the untapped market, especially among younger, globally-minded generations who are natives in the digital transaction space.

We recognize that diverse teams are not just a moral imperative but a business advantage, leading to innovative solutions and a broader understanding of customers' needs.

What do you look for when you recruit new talent?

AS: When recruiting new talent, we prioritize individuals who not only bring relevant skills and expertise to the table but also embody our values of collaboration, diversity, and innovation. We seek candidates who are adaptable, creative problem solvers, and have a passion for making a positive impact in the FinTech space. Cultural fit is equally important, and we value candidates who align with our commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive work environment. A fun fact: 95% of our employees are bilingual or multilingual. This is a testament to the rich cultural tapestry that our employees bring to Oxygen.

Would you cite any particular background or major in school as a requirement for candidates that you screen for open roles at Oxygen?

AS: While specific backgrounds and majors can certainly bring valuable skills, we don't limit ourselves to a narrow set of criteria. We welcome candidates from various educational backgrounds who demonstrate a strong aptitude for the FinTech industry, a passion for our mission, and the ability to contribute to our collaborative and innovative culture.

Any general advice for entrepreneurs eager to work for Oxygen?

AS: For entrepreneurs eager to work at Oxygen, my advice is to stay curious, and be ready to contribute to a dynamic and collaborative environment. We value individuals who are not only ambitious but also embody the spirit of continuous learning and growth. Our marketing team is always looking for entrepreneurs and creators to tell the story of their entrepreneurship journey!
