Every time the season changes, I get the impulsive urge to die my hair. I contemplate going lighter with a honey brown or remaining dark with an auburn red. Then, I think about the damage bleach could potentially do to my coily hair; I chicken out and conclude that playing around with my eyebrows is enough for me at the moment. For those bolder and more experimental, fall serves as the perfect opportunity to revamp your aesthetic. As the weather cools down and the leaves start to fall, a lot of us are drawn to autumnal colors—both in terms of fashion and beauty. Think burnt oranges, copper undertones, burgundy, and generally warm palettes.

So, with it officially being September, and colder days, layered clothing, and wool coats on the horizon, we checked in with four experts with hopes of receiving a bit of hair color inspiration. Ahead, 6 hair color trends that you should consider for fall.

Cinnamon Spice

Brown hair will always be chic and trending but, season after season, the undertones that we're drawn to shift. This fall, hairstylists and colorists alike are predicting gold and copper undertones as the trend of the moment. "This is a rich brunette base infused with warm cinnamon and subtle copper undertones. It gives dark hair dimension without becoming obviously red," celebrity hairstylist Coree Moreno says. "Fall naturally brings people back toward deeper, warmer tones. Cinnamon spice feels cozy and luxurious while still looking modern and dimensional."

Shvonne Perkins, master colorist at Madison Reed, agrees that warm brunette colors will be popular this fall. "People are really drawn to color that makes their hair look shiny, reflective, and rich with tone right now," she says. "Instead of the answer always being to go lighter or add more highlights, this is about adding warmth and complexity to the hair."

To achieve this look, Moreno suggests starting with a deep brunette base, then weaving in strategically placed warm copper and cinnamon ribbons for dimension, and finishing with high-shine gloss to melt the tones together.

Honey Bronde

Celebrity hair colorist Matt Rez affirms that you don't have to choose between blonde and brunette—you can have the best of both worlds. "This is a soft blend of honey blonde and light brunette, with natural-looking roots melting into warm, golden ends. The result is dimensional, rich, and slightly lived-in," Rez says. "Blondes are moving toward warmer, more natural-looking shades that feel rich and require less maintenance. Honey bronde is an easy way to transition from a brighter summer blonde into fall without making a dramatic change."

Perkins believes that this is the perfect and easiest transition from a highlighted summer blonde. "Fewer highlights add depth back into the hair, while honey and graham cracker hues bring warmth and reflection," she says.

Rez suggests asking your colorist for a rooted bronde with soft honey and golden-beige highlights concentrated through the mid-lengths and ends.

Electric Petal Pink

For those feeling a bit more bold this fall, consider taking notes from ADÉLA, whose pink hair has become part of her signature beauty aesthetic. Cherry Cola

For those of us that immediately feel more moody and broody when September hits, we might want to go dark without going for a classic black or brown—that's where cherry cola enters the conversation. "Think deep, boozy red brown that broods in the shade and catches fire the second sunlight hits it, moody with a hint of mischief," Meagan Swartwood, community manager at Arctic Fox Hair Color, says. "It's set to be big this fall since it gives you all the warmth of red without fully committing, the perfect gateway color for anyone easing into brighter shades."

Strawberry Blonde

If you went full on blonde for the spring and summer, but now feel like dialing it back a bit for fall, strawberry blonde might be your answer. "A warm, golden strawberry glow that feels like summer isn't quite ready to let go, sun-kissed with just enough edge," Swartwood says. "It's having a moment because it's basically strawberry blonde's fall era: same warmth and glow, just dialed in for sweater weather."

Sunset Red

For a take on red hair that is more diffused than cherry cola, Perkins suggests experimenting with what she describes as sunset red. Think soft, light, and diffused like an apricot with soft dimensions. "Coppers have been trending for the past few seasons and are here to stay, but we’re seeing them shift into lighter, softer variations," she says. "It has that fall feeling while still holding onto some of the lightness and warmth of summer."
