Could Being More Selfish Make You Happier?

While it can be tough to wake up on the “right side” of the bed every single morning, that doesn’t mean we aren’t always trying our hardest to. Sometimes we need a little extra help, whether it be a morning workout or a quick meditation session. Whatever the case may be, we know that starting the day off right will help us not only have a happier and more productive 24 hours, but will also help us feel more confident and grounded and ready for whatever comes our way. We try to practice the following four things as often as possible to ensure we are staying on track with this. Take a look, and who knows, perhaps you’ll become one of those people who has sticky notes with inspirational quotes on them covering your desk.
Honesty is always the best route to take. How many times have you told a lie (even if it’s a small one) and had it actually work out in your favor? OK, so maybe it happened once or twice, but trust us when we say it won’t always be that way. Work towards being honest, with both yourself and others, 365 days of the year, and good things will come your way.
Set Goals for Yourself
Everyone has goals, but not everyone is actively working towards them. We find that by writing out all of our goals, whether they’re big or small, helps us to achieve them rather than just talk about them. Reaching them makes us, you guessed it, happier and more motivated. It’s a chain reaction, you see, so keep setting those goals, and if you’re having trouble reaching them, start smaller. Just like no question is stupid, no goal is, either.
Practice Saying No
For some crazy reason, saying no is frowned upon in a lot of situations, but it can do you more good than harm if you use it properly. Try to remind yourself that saying no to your boss when they try to give you that sixth assignment that will keep you in the office until 1:00 AM could work in your favor. People appreciate honesty above anything else (refer to tip number one), and admitting that you need to take a bit off your plate in order to accomplish things in a thorough way is actually a good thing. This also goes for when you really don’t feel like going out for a drink, but your friend is begging you—if you want to stay in, climb into bed, and wake up feeling refreshed, then stand up for yourself and do just that.
Never Forget about Yourself
This is something that happens way too easily for each and every one of us. We’re so concentrated on making sure those close to us are happy that a lot of the time we miss out on making ourselves happy. Block off a few hours every single week to do whatever it is that you want to do, and practice that self-love—it can actually never go wrong.
