Everything I’m Using for Glowy, Hydrated Skin This Summer

Don’t let your complexion take a beating.

By: Hannah Baxter

As of today, it is *officially* summer, which means I am one very happy Leo. There’s nothing I enjoy more than spending lazy afternoons by the pool or at the beach, soaking in the sunshine and splashing around in the water. Unfortunately, that means my skin takes a beating from salt, chlorine, and of course, the focus of my main love/hate relationship, the sun. Dark spots, uneven texture, dehydration, clogged pores—take your pick of skin ailments, because they’ll all emerge in the months ahead. But like any other season that requires you to give your skin some extra attention (looking at you, winter), there’s a whole bevy of products that cater to your complexion’s warm-weather needs. Take a cue from my skin-care playbook with these 12 products, and enjoy glowing, hydrated skin until fall.

Pai Light Work Rosehip Cleansing Oil, $56

I’m always a fan of double-cleansing, but when it’s hot and my A/C decides to give out in the middle of the night (which means I sweat, ugh), my skin is especially appreciative. Even better, the slip of this Pai cleanser is ideal for my morning gua sha routine, which I highly recommend if you want to depuff and sculpt your jaw and cheekbones.

Peach & Lily Power Calm Hydrating Gel Cleanser, $28

I try to avoid heavy cream cleansers in the summer, when my skin is already craving breathability. With a pH of 5.5, this Peach & Lily formula doesn’t strip your skin, but still leaves it feeling deeply clean. I love that I can pat dry with a towel and I don’t immediately feel like I need piles of moisturizer.

Shani Darden Daily Toning Essence, $52

Big pores around my t-zone have always plagued me, but with this mattifying toner limiting my sebum production, the pores have had a chance to shrink down a bit. Smoother skin leads to a brighter complexion, which is perfect for my glowy skin goals.

Melanie Simon Skincare Serum C, $200

Yes, this serum is on the pricier side, but fading dark spots is number one on my list of summer skin priorities. Also, it contains an unprecedented 15 percent vitamin C and is a stabilized formula, which means it won’t break down and become ineffective as fast as other products. Since it’s oil-based, you need to let it completely dry before applying any other products. I usually use it on the weekends when I can take my time with my morning routine.

Caudalie Vinosource S.O.S. Deep Hydration Serum, $49

The olive squalane in this Caudalie serum makes my skin feel plump and deeply hydrated, like a juicy summer grape. I adore hyaluronic acid year-round for hydration, but this oil-free formula keeps me from feeling greasy despite layering multiple products.

SK-II R.N.A. POWER Anti-Aging Eye Cream, $135

I’m team eye cream and I don’t care who knows it. The skin on my lids and under my eyes is extremely dry and sensitive, and this is one of the few creams that gives me enough hydration without making my concealer pill. It also gives me a brightness I’ve never found in other formulas.

La Mer The Concentrate, $370

Full disclosure: I picked this up from a goodie bag at an event, but wow, my skin has never felt so soft. Any irritation from humidity, sun exposure, sea salt and the like is completely calmed, and my entire complexion is even-toned. I use a teeny, tiny amount on my face and neck daily, and dreading the day I run out because my skin happily drinks up every drop. The glow is real, y’all. Treat yourself.

Drunk Elephant D-Bronzi Anti-Pollution Sunshine Drops, $36

As much as I love the sun and having a tan, I care more about my skin health. Cancer is not worth a momentary bronze, my friends. But I also want to keep my makeup routine super minimal this time of year, so instead of piling on bronzer, I add a drop of this to my moisturizer. A little goes a long way, and it gives me a sheer wash of color that has fooled many a coworker into thinking I spent a day at the beach.

Lano Lips Hands All Over Face Base Vitamin E Day Cream, $24

Lightweight moisturizers that still provide adequate hydration are tough to find, but this new release from Lano Lips contains lanolin to lock in moisture and colloidal oatmeal to soothe any lingering irritation. The added vitamin E also guards your skin against free radicals, and it sits beautifully under makeup.

Tatcha Silken Pore Perfecting Sunscreen, $65

I love this sunscreen. Period, full stop. It doesn’t leave a whitish cast, it doesn’t make my cream highlighter pill, and it really does have a silken texture. I will never not store at least two bottles in my bathroom cabinet. Remember—sunscreen is non-negotiable, especially in the summer. Wear it every day, apply more than you think you need, and reapply throughout the day if you’re in the sun or swimming.

Avène Thermal Spring Water, $19

When you’re sweaty and tired and gross from your commute, a hydrating mist can be a lifesaver. I keep the full 10.58 oz bottle on my desk at all times for a mid-day refresh, but the mini version is perfect to keep in your bag for emergencies.

Bite Beauty Agave+ Daytime Vegan Lip Balm, $14

With our office A/C on full blast most days, my lips tend to take a beating. This balm is packed with agave nectar and cocoa butter for deep, long-lasting moisture no matter how dry the air is that day. Plus, it smells delicious. It is on the thicker side, more like a mask, but for an afternoon spent typing away at my desk, it is perfection.
