When we walk into the hotel room to get ready with designer Tabitha Simmons for the Met Gala, the first thing that catches our eye is a floor-length, glittering coat with an image of the Virgin Mary on the back. “It’s Dolce & Gabbana Alta Moda,” Simmons says from her perch on the makeup chair. A stunning blush tulle dress with its own splash of embroidered red roses hangs next to it. Complete with a custom Dolce & Gabbana crown, a sparkling clutch, and her own satin-and-crystal shoes, the look is a perfect representation of this year’s theme, “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination.”

In between weaving fresh flowers into her hair—courtesy of Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana themselves—and quickly pumping breast milk before shimmying into her dress (the realest getting-ready step we’ve encountered), the new mother happily gave us the rundown on her whole Met Gala look, her favorite part of the evening, and the friend she loves to split a bowl of bolognese with before hitting the red carpet.

“I think this might be the tenth anniversary [of me attending the Met]. I need to double-check, but I think somewhere around that.”

“No [I don’t get nervous on the red carpet]. I just look down and try to power down it as quickly as possible. And when you get to the top, you’re kind of like, ‘What happened?’ [laughs]. It’s not like you don’t remember, but you sort of go into it, and then you’re right at the top, and it’s like, ‘OK, all set, I did it.’ And they’re all completely screaming and it’s chaos. In that aspect it is a bit overwhelming, because there’s so much going on.”

“I have to remember, don’t laugh too much [on the red carpet] because sometimes I break down and start laughing!”

“I think it’s a really incredible theme. There’s just so many beautiful costumes and inspiration from the church.”

“I’m wearing Dolce & Gabbana Alta Moda. The pink dress was made for me, and the coat was from a show, I think last year. Dolce & Gabbana always have a theme. They’re always referring to the saints, cardinals, vicar, the church. It’s really part of their DNA.”

“The headpiece is almost like a saint. It’s quite heavy [laughs]. I’ll probably wear it to the Met and take it off for the party. It depends on how I’m doing. It’s a real costume. And my Tie The Knot Rose Satin shoes.”

“I was at the gym eight-thirty this morning, and then on to facials, and by the time it’s hair and makeup and manicures, it’s an all-day thing. We started at three o'clock.”

“For the beauty look, I took the Dolce & Gabbana DNA and an almost Sophia Loren vibe. Because it’s such a statement with the coat, I tried to keep everything very clean. Clean nails, face, lips, and eyes just one line [for the wing].”

Yumi Mori: “It’s NARS Lobella on the lips. Madina highlight, Armani Luminous Silk foundation and concealer. NARScissist Dusk Intensity cheek, a blend of two for a really fresh look. MAC liquid eyeliner and L’Oréal voluminous carbon black mascara.”

“I got a facial at Georgia Louise. I love [her]. I went to AKT this morning, an exercise class, so I would be a little bit more energetic.”

“Every year, we always had this tradition, and it was Lily Aldridge and I; we’d split a massive bowl of spaghetti bolognese at either The Carlyle or Sant Ambroeus, but this time around I went for a more healthy option. I went to Kappa Maso with my fiancé. I went and had a healthy meal [laughs].”

“For hair we did a loose knot at the back, very soft. And we added some fresh flowers.I just started using Elnett. For some reason I’ve gone back to old-school. It really works [laughs].”

Rebekah Forecast: “I used a bit of the Oribe Maximizing Thickening Spray with the [Harry Josh] blowdryer. We’ll use a little eyebrow gel for the flyaways. It’s Anastasia Clear Brow Gel for flyaways, because you don’t want the hair too tight, but when it’s softer, it’s harder to get those those to stay down. I use a bit of that. It’s the same brow gel on the brows.”

“I love Jo Malone Rose fragrance.”

“It depends on whether I went to a few after-parties or not [laughs], but normally I’ll take [makeup] off with Nivea cleanser.”

“There’s always someone who you’ve always really admired, and you bump into them, and they comment on how much they like your dress, and you’re like, ‘Oh my god.’ You never know who you’re going to bump into there, which is quite exciting.”

“My fiancé just called [the Met Gala] the Super Bowl of fashion. I think that’s really good.”

“Just the phone in the bag, maybe a lipstick, and that’s pretty much it.”

“Every year I always think it’s my favorite look. This one I particularly love because it’s very on-theme with the Met. Some years I’ve been very on-theme, and others less on-theme. I absolutely love this one. There was one where I wore a huge pink dress, and it had all the flowers on it. I loved that as well. But I’ve never worn a coat before, so this one is very different.”
