How Lea Michele Gets Her Perfect Beach Waves
And what she talks about with her stylist Sarah Potempa behind closed doors.
Like most hairstylists and their clients, Sarah Potempa and Lea Michele know everything about each other. (My hairstylist has coached me through more crises than my therapist—whether that’s for better or for worse.) After all, the two have worked together for 13 years, back before Michele burst onto the scene with Glee, when they were doing a shoot for the New Yorker.
Now Michele, the singer and actress of The Mayor, and Potempa, the pink-haired founder of cult hair tool the Beachwaver, have a whole other level of intimacy as they travel the world together. They know the ins and outs of each other’s wardrobes and schedules, they have war stories about press tours and concerts, and they’ll also happily take a few fun, fairly clothes-free Instagrams together, as we learned after filming with the duo at NYC’s 11 Howard hotel in SoHo. Basically, being a fly on the wall was like watching the slumber party you really wish someone would invite you to.
What we were most eager to learn, however: Please, for the love of god, will Potempa teach us how she does Lea’s hair like that?! We got a few hours with Michele, Potempa, and makeup artist Meredith Baraf (who often does Michele’s makeup) to get the secrets, including how to make a curling-iron curl look naturally beachy—but still New York-chic—and a little trick that involves using your hairspray on your brush. Watch above!
