Model Halima Aden Is Completely Devoted to One Tarte Moisturizer

“It’s bright and sunny, which is usually not how the weather is here,” laughs Halima Aden over the phone. The budding supermodel is calling us from her hometown of St. Cloud, Minnesota, presumably between traveling for her recent work in Vogue, Allure, and CR Fashion Book Issue 10. At just 19 years old, Aden has amassed an incredible following, not only for walking her first runway show (for Kanye West!) in a black hijab, but for managing her newfound notoriety with an ease beyond her years. A megawatt smile doesn’t hurt either! So we were particularly curious to know exactly how the bubbly teenager maintains her beauty routine with such a busy schedule, what beauty products she swaps out for the summer months, and how she brings it all with her for her worldwide travels.

Who are your ultimate beauty idols?

Jackie Aina—I really like her YouTube videos. Also, Zendaya, because I noticed on her Instagram she posts a lot of, like, makeup-free pictures. We have the same beauty regimen [because] I think she tweeted something about using tea tree oil on problem spots. I thought that was really cool, and I love her skin. Those two are my favorites.”

What’s your summer skincare routine?

“If I have a pimple or something, I’ll use a little bit of tea tree oil, just temporarily. I notice that during the summer, [other] oils don’t really do it for me, mainly because it’s hot outside and I don’t want to look greasy. So, I stay away from oils for the summer, but I still like to moisturize. I’m obsessed with Tarte Drink of H2O Hydrating Boost Moisturizer. During the summer, I usually tend to stay away from makeup. I go for just a natural, glowy look [for] my face. As long as it’s moisturized, my eyebrows look nice, a little bit of mascara and a nice lip balm—that usually does the trick for me.”

How do you dry your hair in the summer?

“I never blow-dry my hair. Never! I have to get out the door ASAP, but I usually wake up early to make sure I give myself enough time to have it air-dry. I don’t even use towels anymore because my hair, I noticed, is very fragile when it’s wet, so [to] avoid breakage I just take a t-shirt, wrap that around my hair, and wait for it to dry. The shirt material is not as tough as towels, so it doesnt break my hair. It’s very gentle.”

What’s your go-to look for a summer party?

“Any event I go to in the summer, for the most part, I try to stay away from heavy makeup. I go for easier powders versus full-coverage foundations. I just got this one, Mac Studio Fix Powder Plus Foundation. I haven’t tried it yet, but all my friends have really good comments about it. I’m excited, because it’s still kind of full-coverage, but it’s a powder.”

How do you organize all your products when you travel?

“I pack less during the summer, but the way I organize my makeup when I’m traveling is I have this little compartment with three bags. One is for eye shadows and one is for my lipsticks. One is for my face primer and powder.”

What are your favorite drugstore products?

“I have a ton of Maybelline products that I usually combine [with higher-end products]. My favorites are Maybelline Volum’ Express The Falsies Black Drama Mascara, Maybelline Color Tattoo Cream Gel Eye Shadow, and Maybelline FaceStudio Master Fix Setting + Perfecting Loose Powder.”

Do you have any go-to summer beauty treatments?

“I always get my eyebrows threaded. I’ve never had a wax. I usually do that a lot more in the summer, only because I have much more time. Other than that, I’m really not a nail person. I bite my nails, so I kind of stay away from nail salons.”

Have you made any recent changes to your beauty routine?

“Usually what I really like to do is coconut oil for my face, but I notice that during the summer, oils don’t really do it for me, mainly because it’s hot outside and I don’t want to look greasy. I realize a lot of the things that affect our skin are what we eat and put into our system. When I’m using all these natural ingredients, it kind of challenges me to eat healthier and drink a lot of water.”
