8 Fashion World Moms’ Indispensable Advice

Remember the time that you, in your underage prime, attempted a stealth night out in the city and were stopped dead in your tracks by your mom, highly suspicious of your What? I always wear winged liner when having a sleepover at Brittany’s cover-up? Yeah, that never worked for us either. There’s no one who can single-handedly call you out on your B.S., then make you a better person all while having your back, quite like your mom. So while we officially get just one day a year to formally acknowledge our OG and generally wise and all-knowing BFF, we’re pretty sure that she knows how lost we would be without her for the other 364 days.

But this is about her. So we asked some of our favorite editors, designers, and all-around ridiculously glam women what they love most about their new-ish maternal gigs and what they’re hoping to wake up to (hint: anything of the Isabel Marant or something of the gluten-free, fruit-filled pancake variety, and some extra zs) on this most holy of celebrations in their honor. Because moms know best, right? Especially these ones.

Eva Chen

Editor-in-Chief, Lucky Magazine

ON THE BEST THING ABOUT BEING A MOM:

“How a single smile can make your heart explode with joy. No matter how happy you thought you were before, it makes you realize the human capacity for love is even greater!

ON WHAT SHE WILL PASS DOWN TO HER DAUGHTER:

“Anything my mom gave to me.

ON THE ONE PIECE OF ADVICE SHE WOULD GIVE TO OTHER MOTHERS:

Automate your life as much as possible—groceries, manicure appointments, diapers, etc. The less you have to think about the mundane, the more time you have to spend with your little one!”

ON THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE SHE WOULD GIVE HER DAUGHTER:

Happiness is everything.

ON WHAT SHE’S ASKING FOR ON MOTHER’S DAY:

Eleven hours of uninterrupted sleep. Chances of that happening are, of course, very slim.

Margherita Maccapani Missoni Amos

Designer

ON THE BEST PART OF HAVING CHILDREN:

“Always having a reason to get up in the morning, no matter what.”

ON HOW HAVING CHILDREN INSPIRED HER:

“I wasn’t expecting children’s clothing to be so non-child-friendly, which propelled me to begin designing children’s wear. After having my first son, Otto, this became my passion. I launched Margherita in March (exclusively in the U.S. at Nordstrom and MargheritaKids.com) and am currently working on my third collection, which will be available next spring.”

ON HER ADVICE FOR NEW MOMS:

“Go with the flow…”

ON WHAT SHE WILL ALWAYS TELL HER KIDS:

“Always be yourself.”

ON WHAT SHE IS ASKING FOR ON MOTHER’S DAY:

“A couple of pajamas and slippers for my hospital bag.” [Margherita is pregnant with her second child—due in early May.]

Molly Guy

Creative Director, Stone Fox Bride

ON WHY MOTHERHOOD IS NEVER DULL:

“Motherhood is like eating a bunch of acid then walking barefoot through a wide-open field filled with fragrant rose bushes, fluffy white bunnies and bouts of burning hellfire. In other words: never a dull moment.”

ON HOW BEING A MOM THREW HER FOR A LOOP:

“I thought it made would make life a lot more boring and predictable, but its actually just the opposite.”

ON THE HEIRLOOM SHE WILL GIVE HER DAUGHTERS:

“My nanas emerald—I reset it a few years ago and wear it as an engagement ring between two diamonds. I would love to pass it on to my daughters one day—maybe they can turn it into an amazing necklace or bracelet.”

ON IGNORING ADVICE:

“Dont take advice. Youre the only one who knows what your child needs.”

ON THE ADVICE SHE WILL PASS DOWN:

Love is a verb. My mom passed this little gem on to me recently, and I think its pretty brilliant.”

ON WHAT SHE’D LOVE FOR MOTHER’S DAY:

“Id love something Isabel Marant, but Ill settle for buckwheat blueberry pancakes and an extra hour in bed.”

Rachel Zoe

Stylist

ON THE BEST THING ABOUT BEING A MOM:

“What isn’t?  Not to quote Almost Famous, but to begin with, everything.

ON HOW MOTHERHOOD CHANGED EVERYTHING:

“The best thing about being a mom is the unconditional love you get 24 hours a day. It’s unfathomable. I’m in a good mood every day because of my kids, and if I’m stressed or upset, it goes away instantly when they give me a hug. The thing I didn’t know is how it really does change everything... It changes everything in a really positive way.”

ON HER ADVICE TO NEW MOMS:

“Don’t be scared, and trust your instincts. And try not to miss anything and enjoy every minute of it.”

ON WHAT SHE’LL TEACH HER CHILDREN:

“Respect women. Respect people. The one thing that I really instilled in Skyler was to always be kind to people. And he is—he’s such a kind soul.”

ON WHAT SHE’S HOPING TO GET FOR MOTHER’S DAY:

“Lots of arts and crafts from the boys—anything handmade!  Anything Jennifer Meyer, Anita Ko, or Tiffany’s that’s engraved.”

Lauren Santo Domingo

Co-Founder and Creative Director, Moda Operandi; Contributing Editor, Vogue

ON THE BEST PART ABOUT BEING A MOM:

“When your child reaches for you, touches you, hugs you, kisses you...or even just looks at you, its the best feeling in the world; it never gets old.”

ON WHAT SHE WILL BE PASSING DOWN:

“Im saving it all.”

ON WHAT SHE WOULD SAY TO NEW MOMS:

“Be interested in many things apart from your children.”

ON WHAT SHE IS ASKING FOR ON MOTHER’S DAY:

“Some fresh flowers would be lovely. Peonies are my favorite!”

Nasiba Adilova

Director of Business Development, Buro247

ON THE BEST MOMENTS OF BEING A MOM:

“Waking up every morning to a big smile on the face of the most precious person in the world to you.”

ON THE SURPRISING AMOUNT OF LOVE SHE’S FELT:

“I knew that I would love my child, but I could never fathom to which extent. It is indescribable love—one you have never felt before and never could feel unless you have experienced motherhood.”

ON WHAT FIRST-TIME MOMS SHOULD KNOW:

“It is only hard in the beginning. It gets so much easier and so much better! You just have to make it through those first four weeks of no sleep.”

ON WHAT SHE’S ASKING FOR ON MOTHER’S DAY:

“Health for my family and close ones.”

Jane Pratt

Editor-in-Chief, XOJane.com

ON THE BEST THING ABOUT BEING A MOM:

“Everything. It is the most fulfilling experience ever. Thats pretty widely known though, right?”

ON WHAT SURPRISED HER THE MOST WHEN BECOMING A MOTHER:

“How much laugh-out-loud fun it is, and how it teaches you not to take yourself seriously, and how, no, it doesnt make you better at juggling multiple responsibilities—it just makes you more scattered and distracted. But it gives you good material if youre a writer.”

ONE WHAT SHE WILL PASS DOWN:

“I keep trying to pass down all my priciest designer pieces, but Charlotte doesnt want them. She likes my cheap clothes better and steals them all the time. I steal her stuff, too, though.”

ON THE BEST ADVICE SHE CAN GIVE NEW MOMS:

“I couldnt possibly help you, being the worst mom in the world myself. I guess just: Dont worry when you feel like you arent doing it right. And do not listen to anyone elses advice about how to be a mom—do it the way that feels right to you.”

ON WHAT SHE REALLY WANTS FOR MOTHER’S DAY:

“I really want a puppy, but I have two dogs already, so a big hug and kiss will be fine.”

Tracy Anderson

Fitness Expert; Creator of The Tracy Anderson Method.

ON THE BEST THING ABOUT BEING A MOM:

“The life-giving and life-developing responsibility. The feeling of the most pure definition of love and connection.”

ON WHAT SHE NEVER EXPECTED:

“The nonstop worry.”

ON HER ADVICE TO ALL MOMS:

“There are so many people that will tell you what their advice is on what you should do.  If you feel your gut turn on and tune into motherhood and your newborn, then while others may be full of advice and may know a lot, they dont know more than you. Ever.”

ON THE BEST ADVICE SHE WILL PASS DOWN:

“Be authentic. Be brave. Be solid. Be loving. Be honest. Be grounded. Be giving. Be creative. Have a growth mind-set. Be value added to peoples lives, and never be lonely when you are alone. Be happy. Be healthy.”

ON WHAT SHE WANTS FOR MOTHER’S DAY:

“Hours of snuggles with both of my kids together. And I love it when they make me artistic creations from their own brilliant brain spaces!”
